This just in.... We put the meter on it and she's charging at about 12.4 volts. It's supposed to be 13.8. No apparent change with RPM. I think the regulator and brushes are all one assembly on this alternator, similar to my VW's. If I can find the unit, it'll be between $35 & $50. The only thing that worries me is the Haynes Manual says the alternator is not "user serviceable" and the Impco Catalog doesn't show the regulator and brush set sold separately.... I'm going to my mechanic in the AM for the caliper, so I'll check. Okay, so don't ask me why we go to the trouble anymore, but my family (all DIYers when it comes to cars) have kept the '82 VW Vanagon on the road and running fairly well. Last week we lost the rear left outer CV joint (on the main drivewheel, the way this car is set up), and had to tow it home on local streets USING THE '76 300D... woo-hoo... Does anyone know of an aftermarket source for VW parts, or (best case scenario) does Wholesale Parts in Atlanta deal in VW stuff? thanks -- Matt ______________________________________________ Matthew J. Does anybody know the part number for a pressure plate for a Mercedes 300GD? Now, the flywheel is part number 615 032 13 01. I think there may be 3 different pressure plates, but access to all part numbers would be great. Thanks, SDB P.S. If you know of a G-wagen friend/mailing list you can ask, please do. I really rather need this. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 14:12:25 -0600 From: "Jon Filina" Subject: Re: braking news... :) When we last read "As the Diesel Turns", John mentioned: > >-->And, just in case I wasn't paying her enough attention, she decided to turn > >-->on her battery light... > You could have lost a diode in your alternator too... my Olds Diesel had > that glowing symptom when I lost one... I just got back from Dennis' shop. A quick check showed the alternator charging at a hair over 12 volts. He pulled the regulator/brush pack and the brushes were worn down to almost nothing... Pop in a new regulator, and the alternator is back to 14 volts. $50, please.... He's ordered a "rebuilt" caliper ($120) and a starter (~200) that he'll install tomorrow, if I can get rolling early enough... I am beginning to think "Mathilde" just likes getting Christmas presents....she received a caliper and a heater blower motor last year around this time. I wonder what she's going to want next year...
