I recall working on the Brown Pig, a 1979 300SD with 450k miles. This was a car bought for its engine, so we just wanted to keep it on the road until the engine was extracted. One day we stopped off in Jersey City to pick up stuff at a storage unit and noticed the exhaust was about to fall off. We wired that up and noticed a front tyre was fraying. We replaced that and noticed the wheel bearing was very loose. We then did both wheel bearings on the spot. The steering was so much better after that. All this on the street. We do habitually carry enough tools to perform substantial field repairs. More to the point I have a 1964 Land Rover IIA, soon to be on the road with a 300D engine. I also drive a 1956 Series I land rover. Without wishing to provoke the Jeep/LR debate, LRs can take to very nice places in which to break down. I have swapped carbs (yes, spare carb) on the Series I in the field. Also done a complete fuel line blow through for a blockage. Also rewired the dash after one terminal on the ign switch burnt out. Etc etc etc. British built vehicles of course are subject to the whims of Lucas, Prince of Darkness. My IIA has all new wiring and a benz engine so I think I have precluded many possible problems. She will also have a compressor and 6kw generator so I can use airtools and welder in the middle of nowhere. But yes, it is lots of fun indeed. Snohomish, Washington USA - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2000 10:33:33 -0800 From: Mark Fountain Subject: 300D Sound System / Speakers I have a couple of questions regarding the sound system on my 82 300D. For such a well-built vehicle, I'm surprised that it didn't come with a better quality sound system. Oh well, I'd rather that they cheaped out on that rather than some other things I could think of! 1) Is there a trick to removing the plastic grilles from the front dash without breaking them. 2) Has anyone tried to install beefier 3 1/2" speakers in the dash? If so where can I get a couple of these? Should be capable of handling 30 watt per side as I just bought a 30 watt x 4 Sony with a 10 disk CD changer. 3) Has anyone ever tried to install a CD changer under the rear seat as more of a security measure? I'm thinking I'm probably going to resort to installing it in the trunk space. Thanks, Mark ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #269 *********************************
