I believe I have a link on my DieselBenz page that would put you to a page of links that has a wealth of information... not sure where I put it, but there isn't a lot of pages to look at... should be on the main page: http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com **** http://wagoneers.com don't leave life without Jesus, please... I installed a new sound system in my '85 300D. The factory system was excellent for its time, but isn't quite up to today's standards. Considering how air-tight most Benz automobiles tend to be, they sound excellent when wired with a good system. No highway noise, all music :) I simply used a flathead screwdriver to remove the speaker grilles on the dash - I don't remember them posing a major problem. The speakers I put up front were Pioneers of the same size as the stock speakers, and I put 5.25" MB Quart speakers in the rear. If you plan on installing any kind of subwoofer system in the trunk (which I recommend - it's nice to have the full frequency range there), I have some tips for you... First, I had a major problem with my drivers moving so much air that they caused a major vibration that seemed to be coming from something around the gas tank. It turns out that your rear seat has a metal shell behind it that sits less than a centimeter away from the gas tank, and actually comes into contact with the tank at certain points. The tank was vibrating against this plate, causing very nasty sounds. Turned out that I was able to simply loosen the tank's bolts and move it backward another centimeter or two. It has been running for over 6 months this way with no ill effects, and the vibration has disappeared. Second, get more subwoofer than you would normally desire. I found that my subs had about half the volume in my car as they did in most other cars. I have a pair of Infinity Perfect 10's, which are quite accurate and not boomy or messy. I have not tried a changer, but I am willing to bet that you would have some space for one under the rear seat cushion. It would be a pain to have to pull your seat every time you wanted to change your discs, though. I recommend that you install it in the trunk space. Let me know if you want to know how I wired things from front to back... it is easy to hide everything. For such a well-built vehicle, I'm surprised that it didn't come with a better quality sound system. Oh well, I'd rather that they cheaped out on that rather than some other things I could think of! 1) Is there a trick to removing the plastic grilles from the front dash without breaking them. 2) Has anyone tried to install beefier 3 1/2" speakers in the dash? If so where can I get a couple of these? Should be capable of handling 30 watt per side as I just bought a 30 watt x 4 Sony with a 10 disk CD changer. 3) Has anyone ever tried to install a CD changer under the rear seat as more of a security measure? I'm thinking I'm probably going to resort to installing it in the trunk space. On the one hand it will be an awful lot of work to change the CDs, on the other hand you might not be able to use the rear seats for passengers anymore. If someone sits on the cushion, it goes down a lot and does not leave any space under it. Installing a changer in the trunk would not be an option for me because I don't like things mounted in there, they are always in my way if I use the trunk. Why don't you try to mount it under the passengers seat. Most CD changers are flat enough and it is very easy to connect it to the radio. Minor repairs ok... if you don't mind having more than one set of wrenches applied at one time... A couple "fests" ago Mark had about 6 guys helping with his motorcycle... not sure when the hammer came out... but they DID get the airbox out... and we did manage to find all the plastic pieces and get them into the trash ok... ;) Anyone actually coming besides me? Mark will be here, only because he lives here... I'm pretty sure James is coming up because we're overdue on some horsetrading swaps... ;) I've got to run into town to get some wheel studs for the little wagoneer's rear disc conversion, and to pick up some paint for the wife... Email if you're coming and I'll email my cell phone off list. I should be back here by 10:30am if I know you're coming. If you're not coming we'll dawdle and not get back until later. ;) Also email if you need directions. Should be a beautiful day tomorrow once the fog lifts. Otherwise, Mark's J3000 will be here, with Mark, and one of my Jeeps will be here... :) If my wife has here way my stepside will stay home and I'll be piloting the little wagoneer... :) If I know you're coming I'll fire up a pot of coffee and leave it on the porch as well... If it's frosty, careful coming down the driveway or you'll be on picket fence detail with me... ;) I'm hoping to get the rear discs on the little wag, new fuel pump, fix a clunk in the driveline (tranny mount???), and maybe swap out the standpipe and oil sending unit... It's going to Jim Startup's week after next for a new rear main seal and a fresh crankcase of AMSOIL... I'm also hoping to get the TBI harness and fuel pump setup on the Stepside. I'm taking it in to Jim's Tuesday to have the TBI installed and dialed in. It's easier for them to do the last steps with their analyzers and vast experience... ;) I may try to install it tomorrow, and just have them check it on Tuesday... Well, better call it a night, lots to do in the morning... it'll be cold, foggy and frosty until about 10am, so I'll run into town first thing and hope for it to burn off before I don my coveralls... :) if ya make it, great, if you don't, no problem. john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com 67 J3000 (SJ) / 88 wagoneer ltd (xj) / 83 J10 stepside (SJ) http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html http://www.wagoneers.com/book-info.html Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #270 *********************************
