A friend is all hot and bothered to buy an '86 300SDL and has had a favorable report from independent MB mechanic who maintained it. Is this the year and model that had the much-publicized problem with cylinder head cracking? Any feedback/comments/recommendations/wave-offs will be appreciated, duly noted, and forwarded to him. I'm pretty sure this isn't the problem child. It's the 350SDL that had the head problems. The 86 and maybe even the 87's are ok. This is still the 3.0L motor, comparable... somewhat, to the series used in the 300D's. From what I've heard and read it was the 3.5L engine that had the head problems, as did the little 2.x Diesels in the 190D chassis. If he's got a favorable report from an MB wrench, I'd say that's a very good sign. When I asked a qualified MB wrench about the little baby benz Diesels they waved me off without hesitation. You can check the spreadsheet at http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz and see which engine is is and see how close it is to the earlier models. Like I said, it's probably fine. :) john At 09:37 AM 2/8/00 -0800, Farnes_Quinn wrote: >A friend is all hot and bothered to buy an '86 300SDL and has had a >favorable report from independent MB mechanic who maintained it. NOTE: please respond directly to Al Wong at alwong-at-asaaw.com thanx! (see below.) I'm still kicking myself that I didn't buy that large cylinder of R12 at Costco before they restricted it... I've had a few pounds of R12 given to me by friends, so I'm fixed up on my Jeeps. I sold my 300D a while back, but it had been converted quite nicely to R134. To save a lot of heartache. it seems like it would be possible to install some sort of coolant loss or overheat warning buzzer for these models. I was told by a Mercedes mechanic tha once these Diesel engines overheat, they are essentially ruined because of the close tolerences in them. Usually a cylinder wall will score, thus ruining compression or something like that. Apparently that's what happened to my 82 300D-T with its previous owner. There is no reason that this engine should die of lack of compression at only 200 k miles. As far as finding any Mercedes newer than 87 for less than 10 grand, good luck. I've been checking sources like traderonline.com from time to time. Apparently there's succesive large price jumps in used MBs after 1985 year models.
