I can get them quite cheaply through a special contact in Germany and wondered whether anybody else would like one cheap? Many mercedes diesel drivers in Central Europe have some form of engine preheat. I think 25% off list price will be the end result of all this. The list here is around 1100 USD for a D5W, your cost from me would be about 825 USD. The D5W runs on diesel and produces 5kw output. It can be activated by a special 7 day timer or remote control. It will heat your engine block water up nice and warm giving quick and easy starts in the cold. It will prolong the life of your battery and engine. Look here for a description of the D5W: http://www.espar.com/htm/Specs/water/hydro5.htm Eberspacher are a really good company. Their product is the only one licensed for installation into school buses in the US. There are many accesories available. I will be buying withing a week, so if you want one, make sure you get back to me quickly. Regards, Simon Byers. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 15:07:07 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: whaddya think? You oughtta do it. We've been listening to you complain about Fritz's shortcomings forever. Get yourself a real 300D. An 85 is pretty much THE 300D to get. Tweaks to the tranny/gearing/stall speed make it a WONDERFUL daily driver. The only potential problem I know of that's somewhat unique to 85 (84 may have it as well) is the paint. Evidently, they were changing paint formulations around that time to comply with regulatory standards, and the clear coat can start disintegrating. If it doesn't show any funky cloudy big spots in the finish, just keep it waxed, and you may be able to avoid the problem. Just a reminder, the standard expensive stuff to look out for includes all rubber parts, especially the front suspension, and the cruise and climate control systems. Get one of these, and you will finally understand why so many of us love them. The only good things I can say about Fritz are that he got you into (or kept you in) Benzing, and he will have served as a stark contrast to how good a 123 diesel can be. ..ROFL... I'd like to emphasize the paint thing. My 87 300D apparently had the same reformulated clearcoat paint, and the clearcoat disintegrated in two large spots on the roof, and the paint on the hood was cracked like you wouldn't believe. I got a great paint job with the same color MB factory paint for $1500 at a local body shop. But it still cost me $1500 that could have been spent on suspension work, radiator, etc. Make sure the paint is spotless. One place of peeling clearcoat means major expense, since the peeling will expand across the entire panel (albeit slowly). BTW, 87's have the straight 6 engine which requirse no valve adjustments, has a silky smooth transmission similar to the 85, and looks more modern. (People unfamiliar with MB's look at mine and think it's a late 90's model! :) Good luck! Is there anything I should be looking for on this 85 300D Turbo? What was the last year of the 123 series? What's a fair price for an 85? I know I'm usually answering these questions, but hey, I like to hear what others have to say sometimes... like right before I plop down money. ;) john - ------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/johnsjeeps.jpg SuperDawg, SuperPup (the little wagoneer), and the J3000 ...don't leave life without Jesus, please!
