If it's any help, the R4 can be replaced without even removing the radiator. It took me about a day to R&R it. I worked slow. I used a rebuilt R4 from the Pep Boys - in a year or so I may be sorry about that, but until then I'll enjoy the AC. - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Jul 2000 16:49:28 -0500 From: "Jon Filina" Subject: Re: Air Conditioning Jerry added a BTDT, actually Being There Doing That... > **** I just did this on my 300D. Then, again, you may have gotten lucky and bought a rebuilt unit that will hold up! What parts did you replace and what is the cost breakdown? How did you flush the evaporator and condenser? Inquiring minds and all that rubbish... The one thing that you'll need to do with any fuel is make sure it's well filtered. That was the one thing that caused problems for me... I clogged my filter pretty quick. :) Otherwise, when blended in with standard diesel fuel it did fine. I'm not a chemist to know what to look for when you get into extractions from vegetable oil. I know that the hydrogenated gasoline that they use in pollution areas, or the gas-ahol, tend to attack rubber seals, especially in the injectors. But the injectors in diesels don't have a lot of rubber components. On some Diesel pumps there will be a rubber diaphram. There is also the rubber fuel lines and the return lines. The University of Idaho was running some tests on bio-fuel. The 6.2-6.5Diesel pages had info on it before they made it subscription only. There is a lot of promise in the areas of multi-fuel diesel engines. There was a news article a few years ago about a couple of gals who drove a chevy van with a 6.2L Diesel across the country using only waste grease from restuarants. :) I've gotten one of my Diesel cars off of the highway with a half a quart of motor oil before when I ran out of fuel heading to the station. :) I'm sure the guys on the diesel-benz list would love to jump into a discussion on this topic. details on how to subscribe below, john ============================================================================ ========== To subscribe to a list on digest.net, EMAIL majordomo-at-digest.net, no subject needed, in the body: subscribe [ fsj | xj | diesel-benz ] end (note: select only one of the options in the brackets) You will need to reply to an authentication message. Since I don't have the MB service manual for my 82 300D, I'd like to get some specific info on the refrigerant capacity of the system and the recommended amount of synthetic (PAG) oil to add. Since I'm installing a reman compressor and new drier, I'll probably wind up flushing the system and installing new hoses as well. Any other offhand info or tips would also be helpful.
