(information links can be found at http://www.aircondition.com/)? I was leaning toward using one of these if my air conditioner ever failed on my car. I was surprised to see that a 30lb cylinder of R-12 is down to about $700. Last year it was about $1500 for the same cylinder. The only gotcha is that you need a EPA 609 certification to buy the R-12. Then again, the certification is less than $50. Since I don't have the MB service manual for my 82 300D, I'd like to get some specific info on the refrigerant capacity of the system and the recommended amount of synthetic (PAG) oil to add. Since I'm installing a reman compressor and new drier, I'll probably wind up flushing the system and installing new hoses as well. Any other offhand info or tips would also be helpful. Thanx, Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 20:36:06 -0700 From: john Subject: physics question I think about this almost every night driving down this one windy, bumpy, narrow road... infested with little sedans piloted by latte sipping, cell phone chatting occupants... sometimes these guys almost get airborne, which means they're probably doing more than 35... IF one of those little sedans were to cross the line at 35 mph, with a mass of approximately 1,800 to 2,000 lbs, and were to run into my vehicle, let's say head on to keep the math simple, with my mass at around 4,200 to 4,500 lbs also traveling at 35 mph... what would the net result be? (besides a terrible mess?) I guess this is a simple math problem. To actually do the math would require more information about the materials involved. I'm pretty sure that my vehicle would continue in the same direction, but at a greatly reduced speed. I'm sure the forces involved are gonna be horrific. I'm curious and I'm math impaired. (the higher probability would be that the vehicles would hit at angles and not with full contact across the front... not sure how to state that equation though...) (if you can do the math, let's say it's a Honda Civic and either the Jeep XJ or the J10, or even a 123 series Mercedes sedan.) thanx, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ http://www.wagoneers.com/think-about-this.html Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 23:06:01 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: physics question At 01:00 AM 7/4/00 -0400, Cliff Thompson wrote: >John, I'm not a physics whiz but momentum is mass multplied by velocity >[M x V] and you have a big edge there. I feel comfortable driving a Jeep XJ Cherokee or a Mercedes Benz 300D (don't have one right now), but even more when driving a Full Size Jeep. I asked a mechanical engineer friend about this, and he said that if it were two cueballs he could figure it all out, but you'd have to know about the materials involved, angles and so on. For some reason the forces involved fascinate me. I often wander through a wrecking yard analyzing the damage and look for ways of reinforcing my vehicle. Something as simple as a brush guard can give you an added margin of safety. Makes one think about what they're doing when behind the wheel. All it takes is a moment of inattention and... It seems like us male types don't really think about this stuff... not sure what goes through our thick skulls... guess we don't think about it. We see it happen to someone else and see pieces fly and metal bend and don't really comprehend the forces applied to the bodies involved... It only lasts for a moment, but the pain is real. :) Hitting that tree pointed that out to me... not so much the immediate pain, but the residual effects of whiplash... :) Two things make me watch out for these kamikazee type drivers on the back roads: 1) pain and 2) I don't want my stepside damaged... :) that and the paperwork isn't a lot of fun either. later, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ http://www.wagoneers.com/think-about-this.html Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 00:10:53 -0700 From: john Subject: anyone want to be listmom? Since I don't have a Diesel Benz right now it might be more appropriate to get a new list mom. Maybe it's just because Diesel Benz's are so reliable... :) anyway, let me know and we'll have richard make it so. hope your fourth is going well. john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ http://www.wagoneers.com/think-about-this.html Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2000 09:16:43 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber Subject: Re: anyone want to be listmom? Wouldn't bother me at all to retire this list. There are a large number of list members on this list though... It would have to be with all in agreement, and we could keep this list going as a refuge in case the other list got too big or ugly. So, my request for a list mom continues. Someone that can keep it going as an alternate list, or a small private list of Diesel Benz owners. Once I find a listmom I'll retire and probably move the pages I've set up for the DieselBenz off my main page. Will keep the info up there and I'm sure it'll be found by the search engines. Will also keep the same directory structure so folks can find it. BTW, when did the other Diesel list kick off? Do they have digests on line? I'm still hoping that I can run across a late model Benz Diesel deal, or that they market the TD in the M series here in the states. :) Then I'll return with vigor. :) later, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ http://www.wagoneers.com/think-about-this.html Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2000 13:08:15 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber Subject: Re: anyone want to be listmom? I need to work on optimizing it. It was one of those canned scripts you can get off of archives.
