Next Diesel Benz will have a Turbo... I just spotted this '96... but at $27.5K and the reserve isn't met... I'm not holding much hope... I can buy a nice Jeep for that amount... (my wife's Jeep needs to replaced... my jeep is doing nicely... love it... ;) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=374347730 If I could find a benz like this one for less than $20K I'd probably do it. Otherwise I'll be looking for a used 99 and up Grand Cherokee with a 4.0L and Quaddrive. My little wagoneer is really getting tired. It has over 203,000 miles and the transfer case is making funny noises... could have sworn it jumped a tooth on the chain pulling into costco last night.... SO, tomorrow I get to swap out the xfr case with the one I bought for my J10. :) Sure would be nice to have a garage... but wait, I got an offer to do a book on Linux from a major publisher... I may get my garage yet! :) Will write for garage? ;) You know if they made the 4matic with the Turbo Diesel... I'd be heading to the bank if I found one... The 4matic still sounds like an interesting item. Since Diesel's are hard to come by, I'm even considering a gas mercedes... Well, I look, but sticker shock keeps me at bay. :) If the xfr case swap in the little wagoneer tomorrow doesn't fix it we will need to start looking for a new family car. My wife and I both like the 99 and up GC's, but with prices comparable to the benz above, we'll probably be looking for a newer Cherokee, or maybe a 300SD... My wife doesn't like the 123 series body style... which is a shame... it's probably the best. later, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ http://www.wagoneers.com/think-about-this.html Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 23:44:21 -0700 From: john Subject: mercedes question I was wondering which gas Mercedes got decent mileage... or don't they? I've only had one (out of 4) Mercedes that was gas... a mid-7o's 450SEL... the thing was FAST... and thirsty. If I could find a nice family car at a reasonable price that got halfway decent mileage, and was a Mercedes... I'd give it some thought... Anyone got any suggestions? Of course my first desire is to find a nice clean Diesel... :) Of course, I have a feeling it's gonna come back to the Jeep duel... ok, you give up YOUR Jeep for it... :) Of course right now the advantage is that MY Jeep is working, has lower mileage and is more economical than HER Jeep... ;) So if I can find a Diesel Benz SHE likes... well, I'm in fat city. :) john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ http://www.wagoneers.com/think-about-this.html Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 06:18:16 -0700 From: Dave Cavner Subject: Re: mercedes question John, "Mercedes-Benz Production Models Book 1946-1995" by W. An overall excellent resource with a few typo's here and there. Available at larger libraries (perhaps one of the earlier printings anyway), Amazon.com, or your preferred on-line seller. I was thinking that a Land Rover might fit the bill, but it looks like that diesel ones are pretty much not to be found here in the US. In the UK the Defender comes only with a 2.5L turbodiesel. The Discovery has a petrol V8 as an option, but diesel is standard equipment. The Range Rover has no less than three different diesel engine options. Or maybe this from the UK Jeep web site will make your heart go pitter-patter? The Jeep Grand Cherokee surrounds you in a luxurious and spacious cabin which has been thoughtfully designed and crafted to provide an outstanding blend of comfort and refinement. The remarkable 3.1 litre turbo diesel show its full potential off road and when towing, thanks to the delivery of almost as much torque as the V8, at 283 lbft, combined with 138BHP More affordable is the regular Cherokee: The key to exceptional off-road performance is torque - the engine's pulling power. And the 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine in the 2.5 TD has as much torque, a remarkable 221 lb ft, as many much larger petrol units. With identical equipment levels to the 2.5, including air conditioning, twin airbags and electric windows, the turbo diesel's Command-Trac four-wheel drive system has the added benefit of Jeep's Trac-Loc limited slip rear differential to help prevent wheel spin. And there is always the Unimog option.... - -john ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 10:04:34 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber Subject: Re: mercedes question On Sat, 8 Jul 2000, john wrote: > I was wondering which gas Mercedes got decent mileage... or don't > they? Compare with about 30mpg for the w123 300D (turbo). I don't think you will get much better unless you get a much newer model. - -john ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 09:20:07 -0700 From: Richard J Laue Subject: Re: mercedes question - gas models "The Illustrated Mercedes-Benz Buyer's Guide" by Lee Gohlike, available at any large bookstore, is the reference book you need. Thorough, well-organized, and specifically geared to the kind of questions you are asking! Generically, any of the V-8 models from the late 60's up through the mid-80's were GAS-GUZZLERS. Plus, they required premium gas. (But, as you mention, they were FAST and FUN!) In Europe, there have always been more MB models available, but for import to the USA the cheaper models - by cheap I mean in features/engines - have not been brought over. Only the fully-loaded models that would appeal to the upscale buyer.... I think that for most people looking for the ideal compromise between cost/features/availability/reliability, the obvious choice is the 300-series that was introduced in 1985. A beautiful, functional, affordable Benz that is now available on the used market at reasonable prices. (In Arizona or California, a 1986-89 300e with 100k miles and all service records should be easily found, in the $9000 range, for example). The 300-series was also available with diesel, but you guys would know more about that than me!
