Everything is on microfiche so you have to find someone that has the information to get to it. What I basically had to do is to read vacuum and modulator pressure while the car is being driven to see what was going on. To do that, I had to make up a fitting for the transmission, buy a pressure gauge and some hose. I used a Mity-Vac to read the vacuum at the modulator. I monitored the modulator vacuum for a week of driving to and from work to see what was happening, discovered a problem and fixed it, then monitored for another week to make sure the fix was solid, before adjusting the modulator to factory specs. Anything else is just guess work and not worthy of efforts. Every where I went in seeking professional help they wanted to just replace the transmission. SUUURE, it wasn't their money! All for some simple transmission adjustments. I went out and fixed a friends '85 300D that was doing the same thing. He had better luck as his hadn't been flaring that long, and shifted perfectly when we were finished. So when it is flaring, I would get it fixed PRONTO. All you are doing is wearing some very expensive parts in that transmission. Mine shifts from 2-3 ok, but there is some glazing on some friction plates from the years of abuse, so the exchange is slow. I can run full throttle through all of the gears without a problem. I continue to nurse it along. If I had the micro-fische for it, I might attempt to try to fix it further. I was at Benz-Friends and found my way back to their transmission room to get a look inside one of these beasts and I can tell you they are like an extremely fine mechanical watch inside. Too many pieces for me to fool around with without the proper documentation, and a job like that I want to get it right the first time! Hi: First post. Very happy to have found this group. Been lurking for a couple of weeks, and am SURPRISED to find EVERYONE with the same set of problems, leaky trunk, vacuum, etc. etc. Vacuum: That "squealing" noise is likely the source of the vacuum leak. Great troubleshooting aid if you've got the symptom. Since it's in your door, that's the likely candidate. The engine run-on symptom is indicative of vacuum failure, sounds like the door is the place to start. Parts. I'm interested in rebuilding the interior of the car, new (horsehair) seats, mats, dash, dashcover, doors (moulded) etc. I have the CD from MBZ that is a bit daunting, but has "everything" on it. I'm looking for some parts houses that might have 1979 300SD Parts (inexpensive is good too) Previous ownership 1979 300SD Blue/Bamboo Lthr 1979 6.9 (Nice car but auto leveling suspension was just too much for repairs, also gas mileage was a factor) 1979 300SD Yellow/Bamboo Lthr Decided I liked the diesel after all Just put in a new factory rebuilt engine after about 280,000 mi Considering a take-it-to the metal exterior redo and full interior rebuild Lets see if it can go another 21 years. Like to hear from others who have "been down that road". I'm in no rush, and will appreciate any feedback. ********************************************************** *Richard L.
