It's me... the guy with the problem 240d ;) I have what sounds like a pre-ignition problem. At least that's what it would be if it were a gasoline engine. At speeds between 35-55 mph with no load (just crusing) it sounds like I'm making popcorn under the hood!! ;) Not just that nice "bag of marbles" sound.... As soon as I apply some throttle it goes away... Hmmmmm.... Timing? How would I check the timing? I'm thinking that it must be injection timing. Is there any other timing to set besides the injector pump? Any thoughts? Thanks! I'm heading down to Portland Friday (tomorrow)... there is a German deli down there that has the European country decals, like the USA or D for the back of cars... Also the AMSOIL warehouse is down there. If anyone up here needs either let me know before late morning. If there is interest I'll swing down to Powell or Tigard before heading to Clackamas... Also let me know if you're interested in the tilt column out of a 67 Super Wagoneer. ;) It should fit in the trunk of the Benz... I'm hoping to take the 300SD down. The glow plug module didn't arrive from the Dealer today. :( I think I'll run out and through my old magnetic mount engine heater (used to use it on my tractor) to take the chill off so he lights off in the morning. Someone is trying to get me to sell the 300SD for $5,100... I'm into it almost $6k... I think I'll just drop insurance on SuperDawg and do more work on him. :) He's making progress, the ride has improved greatly with the blocks and new tires. I like the little wagoneer, but I'd much rather be getting 30mpg than 16. :) Besides, the seats in the xj kill my back. SuperDawg seats two, and my daughter decided to skip college classes and go shopping at Clackamas town center. :) My son was supposed to go down, most of the parts are for him anyway... but he's going to work... Hey, you Seattle types, I can bring back Bratwurst if that turns your crank... ;) The Edelweiss Deli makes some great brats! :) We'll probably be at Clackamas Town Center around 2 or 3, taking off around 4pm and heading down to Silverton... then driving back... not a lot of time for visiting... If you're down in the area, drop me an email and I'll give ya my cell number and we can meet up for pictures or a latte down in Clackamas. :) I'd love to head over to Beaverton and check out Fredric's new UNIMOG!!! and to say hi to Brad and Greg and Whit and... but I have a feeling we'll start late, arrive late and get home even later. We're so lame... :) And too cheap to spend the night. So many folks I want to visit with down there. My old friends from ITT and Intel... and from Seminary... sheesh... never enough time. :( john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Nov 2000 21:08:51 -0800 From: john Subject: crazy thought... It is not side-to-side play, but very slight, but noticeable, front-to-rear play. I assume, though never having seen exactly how the Benz steering wheels are held on, that the bolt or nut underneath the horn pad has begun to work loose. I have looke dat it a few times, but my big head will not fit back there to actually "see" anything, and I cannot feel enough play anywhere to figure out where to squeeze it to pop loose some tabs. Anyone tell me hoe to remove the hron pad so I can check in here and get this thing tightened? I don't like the idea of driving it with it even slightly loose! Thanks! Michael - --- J. Hey John, I'd be happy to pay $6K for it if there's a way to get a tilt wheel into it. But from what I've been able to find out so far, there's no way to do that. I'm told the '86-up models have a telescoping column, but they don't really tilt, so I'm not sure even that would work; I'd just have to get my wife into one and see if it works for her. Anyone know anything about tilt wheel in a 300SD or 300SDL? It's a requirement for me because of a disability my wife has. So check fluid level (if you're not sure of it, just replace it - old brake fluid contains water that lowers boiling point thus degrading braking performance). Then check rotors (discs) and brake pads - they sometimes need replacing even if wear indicator is not lit (especially with unevelny worn pads) ->if have unevenly worn pads, check rotors (they should maintain minimum thickness of...God knows? mm?) I must add that i've recently replaced front rotors and brake pads with genuine MB parts. Also replaced brake fluid. Since then my brakes are really razor sharp and very resistant to overheating (even when braking of speeds >100Mph). Sooo iv you have checked brake system, and still feeling uncomfortable, consider porting four calliper brakes with discs from W140...that's doable. ____________________________________________________________________________ __ * polbox sp. z o.o. * +48 22 685 44 44 * Astronomow 3, 01-450 Warszawa * ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 16:46:46 GMT From: "Mike Mehringer" Subject: Re: transmission adjustments & ACC System I read your article about the transmission adjustments in your 300D. I have an '83 300SD (W126) and I have the problem you referred to in your trans article. I have some (motor I believe) oil leaking (or was leaking at some point) under the key switch. Also, my climate control system doesn't work 100%. Can you describe what happened with your Benz and which vacuum systems/switches were affected? Also, I had my trans rebuilt, and I keep returning the car (under the trans guy's warranty) because of incorrect shifting. The trans guy insists it's vacuum related and I agree with him... however he's having a lot of problems trying to find the problem (he seems pretty experienced with MB trans too). I guess if the climate control's vacuum is messed up the trans could be affected? (and the cruise control doesn't operate correctly either -- is that vacuum operated? It accelerates when you hit accel, but that's it. It won't hold speeds). >From: john >To: "Mike Senko" >CC: diesel-benz-at-digest.net >Subject: Re: transmission adjustments >Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2000 13:09:40 -0800 > >>At 12:15 PM 11/8/00 -0800, you wrote: >>here it is... >> >>Mike Senko > >and here it is!
