In MB model designations, W stands for Wagen, or "car", as in W123, W126, W202. R stands for "roadster", as in R107 (450SL), and is used on the SL's and SLK's, among other things. I think the 3.5 diesel was only sold in the larger S-class sedans, at least in the US. So a 300TD would not have used this engine. Since your model is 300, I'd assume that you have a 3 Litre engine... the 3.5 Litre 6-cyl engine has a known problem of: Cylinder #1's rod bends and the engine continues to run, but wears the cylinder in an oval fashion instead of the normal round fashion. This causes early failure of the engine, in some cases within 70,000 miles! Considering that you got 190,000+ from your engine makes me think your engine is not on of the "flawed" designs. Also, the W in front of the 124 I don't think means wagon... I have a Mercedes book, and it list the chassis numbers with W's in front of them. I assume that is the official designation... ie: W126, W124, W123, W140, etc. Mike M. Thanks Your mechanic is right. The chances are very high that you'll have to replace both of the lines AND the cooler. My '81 240D blew an oil line almost 2 years ago and I ended up having the entire "circuit" replaced because the unions broke. In my case, there was no seepage, the line just went. If your seepage is at the connection to the cooler, you might get lucky. If you have a backup vehicle, I'd leave it with the mechanic to see if he can replace just the lines. If he can remove them without stripping out the unions, you'll be $200-300 ahead. If not... Jon '81 240D 264,000 mi. When I bought my '85 300D it had some generic 205/70R14's on it, and they're worn to the point where it's time to start looking for replacements. Anyone know what the OEM tire (brand/model) was on an '85 300D? I know the standard size was 185/70R14. The oversized tires work well.. would there be any benefit in going back to the factory size when I buy new tires? I've decided to buy Michilen, but I'm not sure which series I should be looking at. The Energy MXV4's are nice, but do I really need a sport touring tire for a car that tops out at 120mph? I would gladly pay the premium for MXV4's if it would be beneficial. I also looked at the Symmetry series, which is cheaper and is also geared towards luxury cars. Any thoughts on this, guys? Chris, Unless the tire specs changed fro 82 to 85, the OEM size for the 14 inch alloy rims on the 123 sedan is 195 70 R14 except for the wagon which has 15 inch wheels (I think). I bought the Michelin X series at Costco 2 years and 50,000 miles ago and have been pleased with them. Tread wear appears that they have at least 30,000 more miles to go. The odometer became accurate to within 1 percent with these tires. I don't that I have never driven a car that measured the miles this accurately. My 300D's lower cooler hose began to weep at the junction between the metal tube and the flexible rubber tube. I was able to successfully remove and replace the leaking line without causing damage to the cooler....I fortunately did not experience any siezing of the couplings. The most difficult part was manouvering the old line to get it free from the car and finessing the new one into place..it was a heck of a job and I ended up loosening the front motor mounts (even had to remove the driver's side mount) and lifting the engine to get the new line installed. I think the line that connects to the upper fitting on the oil cooler would be even more difficult..thankfully it hasn't leaked yet. Good luck to anyone performing cooler line replacements.
