I have Frantz filters in my MBZ: one for the crankcase oil, _and_ one for the fuel. The filters were put there by my grandfather, a very knowledgeable diesel, refrigeration, electrical, and electronics technician. He first heard of them being used on EXTREMELY high performance Caterpillar diesel engines in the high speed tuna boats he owned and worked on. He believed that the extra TP filtration absorbed acids and other things that normal oil filtration didn't hold on to. Normal oil filters hold onto particulates, but the TP holds onto acids and things like that. I have to be careful that i do not put the TP roll in tight, the paper will expand a bit when it absorbs oil going through the system. Also, you should see the color of the white TP after 1K miles of fuel going through it. Venture a guess what that color might be? Wrong! It's steel gray. Not sure exactly what it is, maybe silt from the bottom of the underground tanks, but it's caught there. And if it's caught in the filter, it's not mucking about in my injection pump. The oil in my MBZ engine will never be clean. theres enough crap left over after an oil change that the new oil always looks black on the dipstick. Also, there are a couple of companies that make paper towel oil filtration cans for BIG rigs, and many of the people that use them are touting 50-60K miles between oil changes. Is that for emergencies?" man in Vancouver, WA-WA-WArshington - ------Original Message------ From: jslash-at-execpc.com To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net Sent: December 7, 2000 8:12:01 PM GMT Subject: Toilet Paper Oil Filters!! Hey, my father-in-law used to use those toilet paper oil filters in all his cars. They worked GREAT! My mother-in-law used to get so pissed 'cause he'd use better toilet paper in the car than in the house!! ;) Always use two ply paper ;) I still have one of the units but haven't used it yet.
