Modern computerized diesel motors DO control fuel and air mixtures. Sensors monitor the air temp and flow, turbo boost, Fuel temp and injection pump pressure, etc. The computer crunches the numbers thousands of times a second to come up with the right amount of fuel at the right time injected into the cylinder. Without this technology, dieseld would not run as clean as they do. The motor in my BIG truck even ramps up the fuel pump pressure until the turbo achieves full boost before it unleashes the full power of the motor. If it did not do that, it would not meet the emmissions standards in place in the time period it was built. I'm a little confused as to what you mean here. A diesel has no "mixture", it gets all the air it wants, all the time. That's one reason they get better efficiency than gas engines, becaue there's always plenty of oxygen for complete combustion. > Just avoid the old Chevy 6.2 liter diesels, along with any other > diesel that can do a good James Bond smoke show. ;-) Hey, I resemble that remark. :) The rig I drive the most is an '83 Suburban with a 6.2. It runs great, gets 20 MPG, and will hold everything including the kitchen sink, should one so desire. Except for on cold starts, I've never seen any visible exhaust from it, under any conditions, including WOT up long, steep hills. Well folks yesterday was an interesting day.... It warmed up to almost freezing so I thought I'd go out and look for grounding problems on the 240D. She hadn't been run for a few weeks but she started right up without being plugged in. A good sign I thought. The drive was covered with ice all around the car so I backed it down the drive a little. Heard an unusual "grinding" noise coming from the front left wheel. I pulled forward again and it got louder. I looked underneath and only saw my saging exhaust system so figured it was that. Tried to pull forward a little more and the grinding got louder and I could fell a drag being put on the drive train. All of a sudden there was a loud BANG! and the front left side of the car dropped a few inches! WHAT THE %#$-at-#?!?!?! I get out of the car and look underneath.... There is the front coil spring laying on the ground!!!!! How the H#$-at--at-$ does the coil spring fly out of the car?!?!? This car is getting VERY discouraging... :( Anyone have any thoughts on why this would happen? I was just trying to get the car up on some ramps to clean the ground connection between the frame and engine. Now I'll need to jack it up... it's too low to get at the ramp! Hope you guys are having more fun with your MB's!!! Mark Fountain 82300D ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 01:25:20 -0500 From: "Chris Straut" Subject: RE: Mounting Sony 10 disk CD Mark, I'm not sure if you'll have much luck installing a changer under your front seats. By the look of things in my '85 300D, there is hardly any room to work with under there. Here's a couple suggestions: Mount it horizontally in the trunk, hung from the horizontal metal plate that extends about 8" out from the back of the trunk. Easy to install this way, as long as your changer comes with the appropriate mounting brackets. Using a trunk-mounted changer can get annoying after a while. Mount it in your glove box. Whether or not this is feasible will depend on the dimensions of your particular changer. The only problem that you will probably run into is that the glove box won't be deep enough to allow you to install the changer and still close the glove box. In that case, you may have to do some cutting of the back of the glove box's interior "shell", which is removable. There is plenty of room back there in my 300D.. I have no idea why Mercedes didn't make the glove box a bit deeper. A glove box mount is a much better option because it is both convenient and semi-secure. If you go for some type of trunk-mounted solution, and your changer does not use an FM modulator (i.e. it must be physically connected to the head unit - this is a very good thing!), you'll be running wires from your head unit to the trunk. It's more work, but it will sound a lot better than a CD signal transmitted via good ol' FM. The best way I found to run small to medium-gauge wire from head unit to trunk in a W123 is: 1. Pick a side of the vehicle - it does not really matter which. Just run power wires (+12V, GND, remote turn-on) down one side, and signal wires (speaker, cd changer signal, RCA's) down the other. Otherwise, you may induce hum and other nasty types of interference into your signal chain. 2. Remove the two plastic panels in the foot area on the chosen side of the vehicle. There is one to the side nearest the door, and another that sits horizontally above the foot area. 3. Loosen the bottom of the plastic column in between the front and rear doors. I believe it is secured with a philips screw or two. 4. Remove the plastic running-boards on the side of the vehicle. This may require some force if they have never been previously removed. 5. Remove the back seat. Remove the bottom cushion by depressing in the orange release tabs and pulling up. To remove the back cushion, remove the 3 retaining bolts (one of them can only be accessed by lifting the center arm-rest about half-way), move the seatbelts out of the way, and pull upwards. After that's all done, take a look at the situation and you should be able to see how you can run wires all the way from the head unit to the trunk while keeping them completely hidden. You won't have to pull up any carpet or drill any holes! Good luck! Let me know how it works out..
