Because I was going to drop the insurance on the J10 again. ;) but I'm ready, the fleet now contains 1 xj, and 3 FSJ's: http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/Johns-Jeeps-Feb15-2001/ the "new" 80 chero is at: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/johns-80-Cherokee ...after Sunday I'll be driving the 300SD until it sells. That'll give me time to go through the '80 Cherokee. Since SuperDawg's motor is shot I'm going to use some of the new engine parts on my '80 Cherokee, putting the useable but worn parts on the '83 J10. The plan is to keep the J10 driveable. The interested buyer is going to swap in a V8, so as long as it's able to drive onto the boat and to his house in Belgium that's all he's worried about. :) And if he should change his mind, SuperDawg will still be a useful part of my fleet until I can do the xj motor conversion. :) Or maybe a 3.0L Mercedes Turbo Diesel mated to that 5 speed... :) Since I won't need to hurry the project that might be the best idea yet. If it doesn't sell, it'll become the DieselDawg. This whole thing with the Cherokee is pretty crazy. We went over to Eastern Washington Saturday looking for an M715 for Mark, came home and found an email from a friend in Tri-Cities about an ad for a 6 cylinder Cherokee... he was kidding about it, but I called on it and bought it sight unseen. And then, out of the blue a college student from WSU in Pullman emailed about selling his Cherokee and then offered to drive my Cherokee from Spokane to here so he could get home to his girlfriend on Valentine's Day! (about 320 miles!). So I took pictures of his Cherokee today and am trying to help him sell it on my server, it's got the 401 V8! http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/79-WT-Cherokee (turns out he was in classes with my daughter, and his sister is in classes with my son... small world... ;) Anyway, I got the parts for my '83 300SD today to fix the accelerator pedal and the heating system (mono-valve), along with new fuel filters. It's running great again. Feels great. Should have it all fixed up by this weekend, the snow is only here for a couple days... :( IF you know of anyone interested in that '79 WT Cherokee with the 401 email Ian Conley . If you know of anyone interested in a nice '83 300SD, email me. ;) http://wagoneers.com/300SD I've got a driveway full of dirty vehicles... guess I'll wait until the rest of the country is in the grips of the artic blast we're getting right now and then wash 'em... It's my favorite sport to let my folks down in Florida know I'm washing my cars when they're in the middle of a deep freeze... rofl... later, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 21:23:36 -0800 From: john Subject: monovalve When I do the repair I'll photograph it. It's a simple procedure... I did the one on my 123 in a parking space down in Seattle waiting for the wife... two screws and voila. :) got the parts, but it's snowing outside so I'll be driving SuperDawg one last time before I decommission him. I'm sure you saw my post on the lastest addition to my fleet. :) What a crazy deal that was. Ever buy a car sight unseen before? And then have a college kid volunteer to drive it across the state for you? What a blessing. Saved me a bunch of time and hassle. john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 10:52:04 -0500 From: "S.D.Byers" Subject: I just woke up Last week I realised waht pure pleasure it is to be driving a 300D engine with a manual transmission. I remembered that this engine was only ever supplied with automatic box in the US. I have a Mercedes 300D engine and manual trans flywheel and pressure plate. A land rover clutch plate. A Land Rover Series IIA suffix-B gearbox and tranfer case and 4.7 diffs (ENV on the rear...). This has been on the road about 6 months now, and about 1 or 2 months since I regained the engin's full power by changing the camshaft. The gearing is a little low, especially in 4th gear. I can do 70+ but the rpms are fairly high and so is the noise. The big this is around town or off road. The engine braking is fabulous. I have a very steep drive, and it is my habit, almost without noticing, to walk the truck down the drive in first gear with no brakes.d It just gently gets down on the engine braking. Dumping speed when going is also fine that way,. changing down to 3rd and letting off on the accelerator is great. I may change the box and Tcase to give a higher 4th gear, but almost the same 1st. This would give the following multipliers on the gears 4th 3rd 2nd 1st Rev 1.310 1.203 1.206 1.090 1.105 But only in the high range. In low range It would make my gears even lower I think, a good thing. Anyway, in summary: Amercian car market dynamics are bad! 300D engines with manual trans are fine! SDB P.S. She got a seriously overdue tune-up/major service, plus valve work with the head still on to reduce oil consumption, plus repair of a power steering leak (lower hose), plus replacement of the shifter bushings. Low end power is back, and the car really is a joy to drive. Even if I had spent the money on my 85 300D's suspension and air conditioning, I don't think the W123 can ever be the driver's car that the W124 is. (The 97 Z3 was much better, but it has that ugly little roundel logo ;-) ) As a daily driver, I miss the diesel's easier maintenance (We don't need no stinkin spark plugs!), but when it comes right down to the driving aspect, I'm glad to have a good W124. And my wife can keep her 95 W202 C280, with it's Americanized, characterless competence, even if it does have good headlights, more responsive low end, quicker steering, factory subwoofer, and that cool thing about closing all the windows and the sunroof with the key in the driver's door, for when you forgot to close them before shutting off the car. Still wondering what to get next time. An SLK, a mid-90's 500SL, or a good W126 SEC. Hmm.... My name's Alec, and I'm a Benzaholic. A friend and I have always wanted to put a 5cyl turbo in a 450SL body, or some such. Maybe even go for one of the older SLs. Because the big V8s are so expensive to repair and the drivers frequently clueless you can find good SL bodies with a bad engine. Plonk in the 617.952. Tune up. Voila, mercedes diesel sports car! What fun that would be to drive with a manual tranny etc. SDB On Fri, 16 Feb 2001 Alec.Cordova-at-quintus.com wrote: |-----Original Message----- |>Last week I realized what pure pleasure it is to be driving a 300D engine |>with a manual transmission. |> | |> |>Anyway, in summary: |>American car market dynamics are bad! |>300D engines with manual trans are fine! |> |> SDB | |Picked up my 89 300CE from Ben's Workshop late yesterday. I am getting ready to assault the owner with another offer. When I wrote first time, everyone assured me that at 160K it would soon need some engine work-likely top end if nothing else. However, since that time I found out it only had 132K. Even at what they are asking it is pretty cheap, and I likely only need it to last about a year at tops, but just wondered what general input was. It appears to be quite pampered. Bad thing is it has a fuel leak and I cannot even start it before buying it. It was driven to where it sits now (about two months ago) and I know/trust the guys selling it, and they say it runs well, so I mainly am wondering what the longest I can hope for a well-cared for one to run.
