Info Okay, I went ahead and picked up the '72 250 (which I think is a C-that is what one of the manuals says!) today and drove it around a fair bit. Here is what I could figure out. It runs okay, but I do believe that the dual carbs are out of synch a bit. It idles roughly, runs great under acceleration, but feels slightly "rough" when driving under a steady load. For instance, it will cruise down the highway at 65 fine, but the ride is slightly rough. However, when going over bumps or cracks in the road, I can feel the difference between the rough ride caused by suspension and road texture as opposed to this other type of rough feeling. When going from )-highway speed, it feels smooth, and when going from 65 to 75, it feels smooth, but when cruising at a steady speed, it always feels "rough." Just one of those "something is not quite right feelings." I am interpreting this combination of symptoms (rough idle-not terribly rough, but not smooth-apparent RPM related roughness to the ride-possibly from the out of balance firing of the cylinders-and a very light, "feathery" hesitation while cruising down the highway-I timed this and it seems to happen anywhere from once every four seconds to once every thirty seconds, but occasionally it seem to miss oh so minorly, creating one of those "free-falling" feelings) as related to uneven running of the engine from non-synchronization of the two carbs. Any input on this? However, the interior is as good as I thought, and I drove the thing on the freeway to the DMV for about 22 miles each way-oil pressure is good, idles okay once warmed up, temperature stayed solid as a rock at about 175 (I think), all electricals worked, including radio and tape player (antenna doesn't go up and down, but radio still recieves pretty well, so who cares!), sun roof, all fans, heater, lights, signals, etc, still has emblem on the hood, couple of minor scrapesand scratches, and two weird patches in the paint on the driver's door. Two pieces of body trim off the outside, but in the trunk for replacement, and get this-BRAND NEW Michaelin Radial X's on all four corners-so new that the stickers they came with are still on them!!! Spare is not matched to these, but it is in good shape as well. Original jack in place, original Mercedes tool kit in trunk, locks work, windows roll up and down, wing windows work, etc. Overall, I think you can tell I am fairly pleased. I do think that this one has the "moisture drips in the passenger side floor" issue that I think I have heard someone mention, as I just got my sweatshirt off the floor and it is fairly wet, but I could have spilled something on it as well-I remember that I had my water bottle down there, and may have left the sports bottle top loose or something-will check this later. No real rust anywhere that I can find, and I drove about 45 miles today, and have not seen the fuel guage budge, which is beter than I expected. I was not playing speed demon (with carbs messed up, I was afraid to!!!), but was not being a granny either, and after all of the warnings about fuel economy, I was worried terribly. Being one who mainly drives old, big, American V8 pick-up trucks, I am used to seeing the needle move every time I step on it!!! If I manage to get the 14-17 that others warned of, I suppose I will survive! Now, questions I have are this-what level of manual do I need to get. I am sure that the proper factory manual is advisable, but as this is the only thing I have to drive, I really want to get to work on these carbs tomorrow, so as not to drive out of balance any more than possible. I am not sure how much damage this can cause, but imagine that it can't be good for an engine!!! Mainly, is a Hayne's/Chilton's good enough for temporary help in this department? Anyone on here deal with these before much and have success? Any advice/directions/suggestions? Anyone got a manual and tell me what it generally says about how to dial these carbs in? If I were to break doan and take these to a pro for once, about how much could I expect to be charged to balance the carbs? Any ideas? Thanks very much for all of your help. Info My best suggestion is to drop the gas tank and clean it, reinstall it, and then synchronize the carbs or ideally, rebuild 'em. Don't know if you've ever synchronized carbs but simply put, this involves adjusting the idle 'til they're each pulling the same amount of air. VW bug shops have a manometer designed for this. However, there's also a DIY method which involves using a length of rubber hose as a stethoscope and "earballing" it 'til the sucking sound is the same for both venturis. Of course the full blown right way to synchronize carbs involves some additional finessing. Congrats and best of luck.
