We had this kind of stuff figured out on the FSJ list early on. I started that list in '95 with just a few guys... I've met most of them. That list has grown into about 4 major lists, probably with a couple thousand folks. Anyway, my point is this, seemingly off topic posts tend to stir up relevant discussions. :) BTW, I've found a set of used Euro lights for my 300SD for just over two bills. I'm still waffling on selling... need the money, but not as bad as before... :) getting my concrete in my carport, will do what I can to enclose it a bit... unfortunately, my Benz will still sit outside. (not a big deal in western Washington... where $30 tabs only cost ya $48 these days. ;) (oh, and as a way for the state to save money, they're only giving you renewal stickers for the back plate. :) My utility trailer has a stack of stickers about a quarter inch thick. :) later, john - ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 11:20:36 -0400 From: Mike Aimino Subject: RE: FW: Temperature Gauge and sensor I'm showing 7 volts at the connector and 0 ohms resistance on both the old and new sensors. This gauge circuit should not be complicated...I believe that 12 volts is applied to one side of the dash-mounted meter movement and the thermistor (engine sensor piece) is connected to the other side of the meter movement. If you disconnect the slip-on connector from the sensor, you should be able to measure a fair voltage on the end of the wire...I measured approx 7 volts on mine. >From: Mike Aimino >To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net >Subject: RE: FW: Temperature Gauge and sensor >Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 11:18:44 -0400 > >A cheerful good morning from western Pennsylvania. > >Does anyone know if the manual transmission from a US 240D is similar to >the >manual tranny in a Euro '81 300D? Thanks. Checking Temperature Sensor & Gauge Procedure 1. Check sensor resistance by place one probe on the terminal and the other end on the metal threads. · Cold - approx. 460 ohms · Warm - approx. 140 ohms · Normal Operating - approx. 70 ohms 2. If sensor resistance out of normal range, replace. 3. If sensor OK, check voltage at connector by placing one probe in connector and the other probe to ground (engine block) - should be approx. 7 volts. 4. If less than 7 volts: · Check and replace fuse if necessary. Recheck voltage. · Remove instrument cluster and check for voltage into temperature gauge. · If there's voltage going into the gauge, then check the wire from the gauge to the connector for continuity. If there's continuity, probably the gauge is bad. If there's no continuity, replace the wire. · If there's no voltage going into the gauge, check the wire from the fuse block to the gauge for continuity. If there's no continuity, replace the wire. If there is continuity, ???. Michael T. (just kidding, but it did take TWO Jeeps to extract my trailer when it went over... that was an adventure, my son was watching out the window as I chased the trailer down the hill... but that's another story... ;) I built a metal roof shed roof off the existing single car garage. The garage is so small that a Full Size Jeep or a Benz, will not clear the opening without folding the mirrors back. :) I turned the garage into an 11x13 office with a view. The other problem is the garage is near an easement, an easement that will never be used. :( But nonetheless, that forces me to keep whatever I put there as "temporary". If I get a notice to evacuate the easement I can still do it... I have two other locations where I could build a real garage, someday... :) So, after Uncle Sam gave me back some of my money that he so thoughtfully held for me all year, I decided to at least put a slab under the carport so I could do the engine swap in my '83 J10 Stepside. I just bought a totaled '96 xj with a nice 4.0 HO motor, went to Canada a couple weeks ago to pick up a bargain AisinWarner 30-80Le also from a '96. Now, once the concrete cures and I seal it, I'll back SuperDawg into the new shop and begin the operation. :) I'm also being tempted with the idea of a CJ7 and a Mercedes Benz Diesel swap... :) I should slow down on the ideas though, shouldn't I? ;) I still need several yards of gravel to back fill behind the carport, seems the slope was almost two feet!!! I'll put a few pix up later. Still have to run an HP server into work that's in the back of the little wagoneer (upgraded it from a D270/1 to a D370/1 1.3g of Ram, 20 gig internal hot pluggable SCSIs and a 160Mhz PARisc PA8200 chip, also added a DVD to it... :) but I digress... This morning I was out sealing the roof since I had a few leaks... I just got rained off of the roof, it stopped and waiting a few minutes to go back up and finish before we get more rain... :) The slab is 20x17 under the carport and extends out 12x7 in the front, with a walkway to the existing slab about 4x8. I was charged $2.50/sq ft, and I didn't do anything except get my junk out of the carport. The guy did it all. Nice work. Paul Kershner had him do a bunch of very nice work at his house too. The cement truck driver is in trouble though, he ran over my wife's rockery/garden on the way out... There's been countless trucks through here, including big dump trucks, that didn't hit it... he didn't even stop... I think he didn't stop because he also tore up my neighbor's lawn and he figured it not wise to face two hostile women with gardening tools in hand... ;) Oh, one other very cool thing (if you're into shop type stuff). When I was down at the HP vendor getting my server upgraded I noticed he had a lot of old equipment racks sitting outside... :) He said I could have as many as I wanted... some even had disk drives in them!!! Anyone want to buy a cheap 4 gig SE Scsi drive? $5 plus shipping... rofl... If anyone up here in the Seattle area wants a 19" rack enclose, on wheels 1.1 and 1.6 M racks left, email me off list and I'll give you details, the scrapper will probably come Monday. I made two trips. Very cool setup. I'm going to build shelves inside to store my stuff, totally mobile. I'll put pix up later. lots to do... all the stuff that was in the carport ain't going back in. I'll be giving away a lot of "prized" scrap metal. Brackets for bumpers, custom winch mount type hardware and so on... email me off list and come on by, anything in my Utility trailer is free for the taking. I'll have a pallet of XJ and FSJ parts that will be for sale. Have a few Benz pieces for sale too.
