I've had the 89 300CE for about fifteen months now. M103 straight six, after my spending 6 years or so with an OM617 turbodiesel in my 85 300DT. Initial oil appetite was around 700 miles a quart. Finally had Ben Schotz spend some quality time (and quantity money) with it, and he replaced the valve stem seals (?) without taking the head off. Made it 2800 miles after the operation before she was low enough to add more oil. Next oil change, went to a lovely Mahle filter from Rusty, and Mobil1 full synthetic. I suspect that this is only a temporary reprieve from the oil appetite, but I figured I might as well try to take advantage of reduced consumption while I have it. Could never have justified having to add 5 or 6 bucks of oil every second or third tank of gas. Been just a couple of tanks of gas since the switch to Mobil1. It's hard to know if that should get full credit, but gas mileage is up from a range of 19-21 mpg to almost 23 mpg now. The same day I switched, I also put the lovely full-sized spare on the back right, since I realized that the Michelin back there was well past its prime, and the main source of my 20mph butt wiggling. Full sized spares on matching alloy wheels are both a convenience and a safety feature, don't you think? ;-) But the tire swap, and the oil change kid inflating all the tires to almost 40psi (judging by the way it feels; I haven't checked them myself yet), could have also contributed to the fuel economy improvement. But the tires can't take credit for what subjectively feels like an improvement in idle smoothness. As long as the oil budget doesn't start taking frequent hits again with more leaks, I think I may become one of those semi-militant synthetic fans. I found the return oil hole plugged on the return oil flow pipe on my 300D today. The return oil flow pipe is the pipe that is attached to the cap that covers the oil filter housing. The small hole that is in the side of the pipe approx. 1 inch down from the top had a piece of plastic firmly stuck in it. The plastic looked like one of those narrow plastic ribbons that would be used to help open the plastic wrap on something like a CD case. I have no clue as to how it got where I found it...it must have been inside the new oil filter that was installed at last oil change. The plastic had apparently partially melted from heat, I guess, and it was impossible to cleanly remove all of it from the flow pipe. A piece (don't know how big) is still stuck inside the flow pipe. Tomorrow I am going to order a replacement cap/flow pipe assy. :( Steve Morelen '84 300D _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #551 *********************************
