John, I'm guessing that State Farm will do a lot better for you if they are allowed to. I've always had State Farm and I will continue with them. I had a '89 Mustang Convertable that got slammed from behind by a 16 year old while I was sitting at a red light (talk about whiplash!) He was going at least 55-60 mph, but I only received the whiplash of his rear as he was fishtailing into me (or I'd probably be dead). Needless to say, it totalled my Mustang. The other driver had Allstate, and State Farm made me an offer for the Total, which was "almost" enough for replacement, although I ended up with a '91 Mustang which was a piece of junk....I sold it for a loss a year later....but that wasn't State Farm's fault, it was mine. That's when I got the Silver Hornet. My brother-in-law was leaving the country, and he was having a hard time selling the 80 300SD, so he asked me to try to sell if after he left. I gave him $1500 advance money and I was supposed to get at least that much out of it (he needed some cash). Well, I had it in the paper for a couple of weeks, and I was driving it in the meantime. I ended up liking it and just kept it. My Brother-in-law called it even and we had a deal. I dumped the mustang and have been driving the Benz ever since (it's much more practical, but not as fun to drive---oh well, I'm a father now....) At any rate, I recommend State Farm. I think their rates are a little high, but they've always been very fair in their settlements....I don't think it's worth paying less and then getting totally jipped at settlement time..... That's my two cents...thanks for listening. First, did your 240D run sluggish when the A/C was working? If you didn't feel that was the case, repairing the A/C will result in the car running the same as it did before. In other words, your mechanic's impression of the 240D sounds to be completely different from your's... The 240D is no "hot rod", but, compared to an '81 VW Rabbit diesel with the "economy" 4 speed transmission, it's a "speed deamon"! >He has also offered to put a 300D engine > in it. Is this feasible? The 240D has an automatic transmission, and the > 300D engine would certainly be nice. Has anyone done this, and if so, what > have been your results? My mechanic's hired help did this. From what I remember, he was able to use the 240D flywheel and the 4 speed transmission, but had to had the drive shaft shortened. If your 240D is an automatic, you'll probably still have to modify the drive shaft. If you are happy with the "power" (such as it is) of the 240D, I'd leave well enough alone... My '81 240D has far more power than my '81 VW Rabbit diesel, but less "off the line" pep than my Jetta. At highway speeds, the 240D is just fine unless I am forced to slow down going up a reasonable grade. More power would be nice, but the simplicity of the 240D far outweighs the few extra horsepower provided by the 3.0 liter 5 cylinder engine. The big question is how your mechanic suggests fixing the A/C? Is he proposing switching it over to R134a? I am, once again, vowing to get my A/C working. R12 is up to $65 a lb. versus $10 or less for R134a. Plus, R12 is getting increasingly harder to find. I am faced with replacing my compressor, dryer, evaporator valve and o-rings. Now would be the ideal time to make the change to R134a. John, have you talked to the owner of "Fritz"? How did the r134a conversion hold up? It gets pretty hot here in Texas, but even if the r134a only cools the car down to 80 degrees during our 100+ days, that would be an improvement!
