Indeed the 3.5 Litre engine is flawed, but I also hear other conflicting information. I've heard some people say that any diesel engine 86 or higher has problems because of the aluminium heads instead of cast... however I persoanlly think that's not the case. My understanding is that only the 6-cyl turbo diesels have the problem, and all the 5-cyl's are fine. The W124 chassis was produced until somewhere around 96 - 98. The 3.0 5-cyl engine was used in the 80's only, in the 90's the W140 chassis came out (the replacement chassis for the W126) and it was called the 300SD as well, however I believe it was a 3.0 Litre 6-cyl turbo diesel, not a 5-cyl. I belive any 6-cyl turbo diesel had the problem. The 2.5 Litre 5-cyl lived on for a while and I never heard anything bad about it. Mike M.
