Saturday I'm no longer qualified to host this honorable list... I won't even have any mercedes parts laying around... oh, wait, I still need to sell the 300SD Euro Lights... ;) I posted a few off topic posts because I'd gotten some good input from folks on the list. Sometimes a shotgun is the best tool when looking for answers. :) My 300SD goes away on Saturday... The temptation of a 85 300CD will exist for some time indubitably. I'll fight it though, remembering Rube Goldberg's version of climate control, bad Diesel fuel, seats that make me feel like a munchkin and a transmission that varies with vacuum... :) All in all after 4 Mercedes, 3 Diesels, I can say they are an incredible piece of engineering. They handle and brake possibly better than any car on the road, except other German cars... ;) My '83 J10 is getting a frame off restoration... new driveline and new paint. It's been my choice over two very nice Diesel Benz vehicles... If Fritz would have had a turbo... things might have been different. :) If the 300SD had been a 123... ;) hence my slight interest in a 300CD. :) I'll stay on the list and save the digests on my site until the dieselbenz site is working smoothly. There is one other way I might come back into the fold... if they put a Mercedes Diesel into a Grand Cherokee or the ML series... ;) (I think I read that they are planning a v8 Diesel for it, but not sure if it's coming to the states... anyone know?) I'm glad I started the list and hope that it will continue to be a friendly place where folks with Diesel Benz can get the info and ideas they need. Y'all keep in touch. If you're up in the Seattle area look me up. :) A few of you have. john meister ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com via PINE on Linux **** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://junkscience.com ** http://snopes.com ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA ...don't leave life without Jesus, please... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 10:36:35 -0600 From: "HAALAND,SCOTT (A-Roseville,ex1)" Subject: RE: corrected a page I get 28.812 feet/gallon also.....If I show my work, do I get partial credit? 18.05 tons of fuel/hour X 2000 lbs/ton = 36100 lbs/hr / 6 lbs/gallon = 6016.67 gallons/hour. knots X 1.152 = miles per hour 28.5 knots * 1.152 = 32.832 miles/hour * 5280 feet/mile = 173352.96 feet/hour 173352.96 feet/hour / 6016.67 gallons/hour = 28.812 feet/gallon Scott - -----Original Message----- From: john [mailto:john-at-virtual-cafe.com] Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2001 11:29 PM To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net Subject: corrected a page someone called my attention to this page, it seems that somewhere I got some info that the QEII used a gallon of fuel to move 6 inches. Many years ago, I used to navigate seismic survey vessels up and down both coasts of north, central and south america. My shipmates nicknamed me "Wrong Way Tuck" (Wrongway) after I navigated the vessel into Russian territorial waters in the Bering Sea offshore Alaska on July 11, 1979, creating a minor international incident. What's memorable about the experience is that it occurred the day before my 30th birthday. As we steamed west toward the date line, which in that segment was also the border between the two countries, we crossed the line at exactly 4:00pm, July 11. Soon after, the rooskies came boiling out of a naval port to pay us a visit. However, well before they got there, and straight out of the sun, came a Russian aircraft. I thought they were lining us up for a bombing or strafing run. But they just took our picture, I guess. What's interesting though, is that to me, it was 4:15pm, July 11. To that pilot and crew, it was 4:15am, July 12 - my birthday. I aged at LEAST 2 years in that 15 minutes. When flying, I just use my E6B flight computer (ie: slide rule) to convert between nautical miles and statute miles. This time, I looked it up on the web and found this handy conversion page (I'm sure there are others, but this was the first one I found in my yahoo search of knots AND feet): http://www.etfinancial.com/conversion_factors.htm I've bookmarked it for future reference ;) 6016 gallons of diesel per hour is sure a lot of fuel! Can you imagine the bunkers on big ships like that? Enough fuel to fill up tens of thousands of mercedes diesels! I started a Diesel Benz list on digest.net, nice bunch of folks. Mostly quiet... will be quieter now that my 300SD has a new home. ;) the 300D ended in 1985 on the 123 chassis, the next 300D was on a different chassis, 124 I think... I'm not up on the newer stuff. There was also the 190D series, those got really good mileage but had troubles. 27mpg on your 81 240d???? My '83 300SD got almost 28mpg cruising at 75mph! The 3.0L Turbo Diesel is a wonderful motor. I was getting 25mph in town, and would have gotten better on the freeway had I not been in a hurry to get home. :) I'm sure the new owner will get much, much better mileage than me. :) thanx for the note. john '83 J10 Stepside '87 Cherokee Laredo '99 Grand Cherokee Limited '67 J-100 Panel (of course they're all Jeeps... ;) ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com via PINE on Linux **** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://junkscience.com ** http://snopes.com ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA ...don't leave life without Jesus, please... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 18:18:29 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: AC & r134 question. that and the noise coming from the compressor... so I bought a good used one for the new owner, he'll have it installed on Monday.
