Ok Guys... What's wrong with this picture?!?! Even from the description in the auction it just looks suspicious. Do they "assemble" MB's in Tennessee?? Looks like someone hijacked one before it reached the end of the line! :) Jim/ '83 240D john wrote: > sure seems like a lot to spend for a shell... a diesel from > a 123 or 126 series could easily be installed... good idea. :) > > At 11:38 PM 7/7/01 +0000, Jonathan A. There might be many ways a shell appeared, some legal some not. The MLs are made in alabama so that is not such a stretch. Maybe a prototype, maybe cast off, maybe quality problem. Regsitration might be hard though. SDB On Mon, 9 Jul 2001, Jim & Barb Hoffman wrote: |Ok Guys... What's wrong with this picture?!?! Even from the |description in the auction it just looks suspicious. Don't know where this may have come from, perhaps it was destined for a repair. But I will tell you that it's potentially a HUGE bargain. Here's a story. Two winters ago, I was driving my E320T, which has exactly the same drivetrain as the ML. It was a very bad winter day, and I hit a patch of black ice. Skidded sideways into a curb. At first, I thought that there was no damage, but as soon as I tried to move, I knew it was bad. Cars aren't meant to be stopped by hitting the wheels sideways. Two tires, two rims, two drive shafts, two differentials, both lower control arms, brake rotors, motor mounts, etc. Total cost to repair: $25,000. If it wasn't brand new, it would have been totalled. Not a stitch of body damage, either. The insurance company dropped me when the policy came up for renewal. It's easy enough to complete the car....just find a crashed ML or station wagon, you can find them now, and use it's parts and VIN. Depending on your state, there is usually a procedure for registering salvage rebuilds... I was able to track it to the Air Filter. Yup, Seems to be sucking oil up the line from the vacum pump on the front of the engine. and lots of it. Now, I can't seem to find a diagram of this but am wondering if I need to drain the oil prior to pulling the vacum pump off? I suspect I do, but... Is their a seal on the back of this pump that may have gone bad? or should I be looking further down the vacum system? Thanks for the advice, More McCormack 1980 300 TD ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 22:09:12 -0500 From: "Sam Williams" <1sam-at-io.com> Subject: RE: Major Oild Leak More, You don't have to drain oil to replace vacuum pump. Before you do that, find source of the oil. The back of the pump is in oil spray but a bad pump usually doesn't result in that much oil going to the filter. If the shut-off valve is gone, it will suck oil from there, through the ignition switch and out to the filter. Again, the volumes you describe sound high. A bad transmission modulator can suck all the transmission fluid out, but the car would not be able to move. Eliminate shut off valve as the source by pulling the vacuum connection to it and see if oil comes out. Replace the valve if it does. Eliminate transmission modulator similarly. If it is neither of those, then it must be the vacuum pump itself. After you isolate and repair the bad part, use mineral spirits to clean oil out of all vacuum lines or you will experience failures throughout the system later. Seems like it's gonna be the shut off valve. It is definently Oil and not tranny fluid. The volume is definently to high for it to be the vacum pump if it is just in spray. So, My question now is, Where is the shut off valve? I am lacking detailed engie diagrams here so am working somewhat "blind".
