It really gets you when you check fuses and bulbs and it is all so beautifully engineered. My other cars rarely made me feel like that. The throttle has a peculiar behavior, and I'm wondering if it is by design or by decay. At about 80% of the way to the floor it offers substantial resistance. Initially I thought that was all there was. But if you push a little harder it pops down and accelerates hard. After spending an embarrassing amount of time figuring out why the left turn-signals stay on in the (ahem) "off" position, I'm reluctant to start diagnosing a problem that may turn out to be a feature! Cheers, Guy. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 10:09:34 -0700 From: ccordova-at-avaya.com Subject: RE: Non-linear accelerator You might simply want to poke your head down there to confirm things, but it sounds like you're hitting the kickdown switch. That's a physical "button" under the accelerator pedal. Perhaps yours has extra resistance because it's hiding under a floormat? Remember that MB had to pull off a few tricks to get the automatic transmission to work with a diesel. Most auto trannys can read the intake manifold vacuum of a gas motor to estimate throttle position. That way they can shift more softly if you're leisurely pulling away. Diesels don't produce that manifold vacuum, so you need to use other means to determine approximate throttle position. Nowadays, they just use drive-by-wire computers. Your car has a mechanical vacuum pump mounted on the motor, then an elaborately engineered (we try to avoid the term "Rube Goldberg") system of vacuum valves, transducers, sensors, and lots of hoses and connectors. When it works, it works wonderfully, and it works for a long time. After that long time, however, some have developed leaks in the vacuum system. Only then does one begin to understand how nature may abhor a vacuum, but a diesel Benz just ain't the same without it. The turbodiesel W123 (such as yours) is a wonderful car with a glorious motor and a personality that only continues to grow on you. Enjoy it. 'the best car i've ever owned' he says. bastard. thanks for listening. - -luke '66 230 fintail "coco" '80 300sd "bigbrown" assorted landcruisers and one rover all of which could one day have a benz dieselmotor ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #597 *********************************
