If your XJ is '87 or newer there shouldn't be anything you need to change to make it fit. You will need to figure out the motor mounts and a transmission adapter/flex plate setup. I haven't done a swap like this before but I'm certain this will not be a simple one. You will end up making custom pieces to make this work. The XJ isn't really big enough to use the MB engine/trans and then use a divorced transfer case... You might consider the transmission/xfr case from a wrecked ML series. However, even a used transmission from a 123 series can be rather expensive... as our the engines themselves. You need to consider the costs before you under take this project. :) I'd consider spending the money on freshening up your 2.5L a bit... unless of course you have a mercedes engine already... :) john > >From: john > >Reply-To: xj-at-digest.net > >To: Gejkf4cnm1-at-aol.com > >CC: full size jeep list , xj-list > >Subject: xj: Re: Turbo Diesel engine > >Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 21:56:12 -0700 (PDT) > > > >On Fri, 19 Oct 2001 Gejkf4cnm1-at-aol.com wrote: > > > > >-->Hi! Just when you think things are going well. I just got the brakes working and the thing to start on a morning, but Sunday as I was driving back from Church I noticed a nice crunch, crunch sound from the gear box. The gear shifter was travelling a long way between shifts and it was obvious that the shift was not fully completed, but I made it home. As I was free on monday I collared my mechanic friend and we dropped the gearbox, not literally but nearly. We opened it up and found a bent selector fork. The gearbox oil which we had previously drained was clean and without any burn smell, but it had a lot of nice metal particles in it. Oh dear!! My mechanic reckons his dad can make a new selector fork, I'll look at prices from my dealer and keep you informed. Meanwhile my legs are getting some much needed excersize.
