I'd basically hit the mat with the pedal and it would slowly slowly get going. I gave up and found if I slowly depress the foot pedal darned if it dosen't kick into first. Time and time again if I'm slow with the pedal and go all the way to the mat it'll start off in first. Whats up with that??? I have also since learn't that the 123 model was designed to start in second unless the kick down button is hit but whats with the slow foot movement business??? i have the exact problem with my 1980 240d, and ive had the kickdown solonoid on the tranny replaced twice in 2 months but on mine it only works when i first start the car, (when its cool outside) and then after a while when the engine has been on it seems to get slower and slower - -Jeremy Bowne - -1980 240D 215,000 miles - -----Original Message----- From: John Bathory To: 'diesel-benz-digest-at-digest.net' Sent: 11/11/01 7:45 AM Subject: trany kick down I recently had the trany serviced changed the oil and filter and asked for it to be adjusted. Well it shifts smooth even from 1st to 2nd. But the one thing I had asked to be looked at and it an intermediate problem is starting off from a stand still. It seems to always start of in second no matter how hard I try and hit the kickdown switch. Course when I had the mechanic look at it all was fine. I have been tracking it and it seems like 1 out of 3 tries it will kick down and actually start in 1st. Couple of questions here is the kick down exclusive to 2nd - 1st kick down only? All the other kick downs seem to work alright 4-3, 3-2 and I don't believe I have to hit the petal all the way down for those kick downs to function. Another question what should I be looking for in terms of vacumm functions for the kick down circuit? On another note I had the timing chain replaced also which has increase the power noticably and reduced the smoking on cold startups. Thanks in advance. 1981 300TDT 300k kilometers ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2001 14:55:49 -0800 From: "Dan Jacobs" Subject: RE: trany kick down > [Original Message] > From: John Bathory > To: diesel-benz-digest-at-digest.net > Date: 11/11/2001 6:45:57 AM > Subject: trany kick down > > I recently had the trany serviced changed the oil and filter and asked for > it to be adjusted. Which drag strip are you racing at? Just kidding. Any-hoo, When I want the car to take off in 1st from a stop, I move the tranny selector into "L" and back to "D". It will stay in 1st with that technique until it believes it should shift to 2nd. I wouldn't run around taking of at full throttle from a dead stop if you wanna keep this car for a while. The best way to wear out the major components of a car are fast acceleration and hard braking. Just go over to rec.explorer and read about all the folks that need new tires, brakes, and are rebuilding their engines and trannies because most folks drive those cars too hard. Not sure if the "L" trick works on a 240D. Heck, not sure if the original poster was talking about a 240D. Also, to the original poster, make sure your floor mats aren't interfering with the fairly large kickdown switch button under the accelerator pedal.
