There are two switched outputs from the ignition switch that supply power to fuse block and subsequently the CC system. One of them supplies the climate control system along with a lot of other circuits in the car. The second switched output supplies only the CC system and this circuit (fuse nmbr 8) appears to be the power supply for the pushbutton unit along with the solid state switch box that feeds the blower motor. You state that all fuses are OK....are you doing a visual inspection or have you confirmed presence of voltage on both sides of the fuses using a voltmeter? I did both a visual check and used a current tester before, but, following your suggestion, when I used the voltage meter I got only 2 volts. I removed the fuse, and one end was cracked right where it meets the fuse holder. Replaced it and CC works properly. Must have been just enough contact to show current, but not enough to start the CC system. Thanks, Steve! Back then I asked you guys which glow plugs to use (AFTER I already bought some, silly me) and I got the sound advice to use Beru's, but NOT Monarchs. Well Monarchs are what come in and what I put in my Benz. At that time you guys said you wanted to be updated to see how it all worked out.... well... About a week or two ago at least 1 or 2 of the Monarchs burned out, and no longer glow. I checked the glow plug relay to make sure it wasn't the culprit in burning them out, and sure enough the glow plug relay was fine... right amount of voltage and shuts off properly at the right times (ie: after about 30 - 40 seconds, and/or after the starting cycle of the engine is complete). So I purchased 5 more glow plugs, this time the Bosch since they are a great name, the car originally came with Bosch, and since they were the most expensive. I'm installing them tomorrow night and will keep ou all aprised of the situation. MORAL OF THE STORY: 1. You guys were right, so you are free to say "I told you so..." :) 2. Monarch glow plugs s.u.c.k. w.e.e.n.e.y. 3. I simply *love* trying to get glow plug #5 out with the oil filter housing in the way.. :) :) Mike M. 300SD W126 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 08:51:50 -0800 From: Guy Carpenter Subject: Re: 300SD Climate Control Great to hear you got it fixed (and for the price of 19c fuse) With a new ignition switch my problems with the '83 300D seem to be solved too - not blowing fuses, and CC works like a charm. It's great to be able to see out the windows again.
