Dillon" Subject: Question regarding lack of heat in a 1983 300D TurboDiesel Folks, cold air has finally reached down here in Houston, TX. Monday I had great heat to and from work. Tuesday morning I had heat, and half way home Tuesday evening, the heat stopped. Since then it has only worked for a few hours, but today, nothing. When it did work, I could regulate it using the wheel next to the CC push buttons. I have been told that it is most probably the hot water pump, or it could be the monovalve. I asked my daughter to push the defrost button while I held my hand on the pump, and I felt no movement at the pump. Does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this between the monovalve and the pump? Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase a used pump? Thanks so much in advance for your help, and please reply to rfdillon-at-hal-pc.org. Thanks and have a GREAT day, Richard F. I have a source for rebuilt mbz calipers, with pads... I need to check the current price but I could probably retail them for about $80 each... with pads... rebuilt mercedes parts... not sure what shipping will run, but I have a discount with UPS too... :) If there is any interest I can check with my supplier... I'm busy and don't really care to compete with rusty... check with him first. he'll be faster... I barely have time to get a cup of coffee during the day... :) (UNIX Sys Admin... ;) Rusty is a great source for OEM type parts. His normal price beat jobber pricing at the dealer. My other supplier is a major distr... a friend runs it, otherwise there'd be no way I'd qualify with volume to get his prices... I've checked with other suppliers that aren't as big and they want at least $10,000 worth of business a month before they'll even consider an account... and they cost more than the other distr... I'm going to be checking on some parts for my WJ next week, so let me know off list if you'd like me to check on parts. Most of his stock is major brand type stuff, but he did have a few MBZ items... won't hurt to ask. :) I think he handles delco, autolite, dayco and stuff like that too... have his line card around somewhere, or I'll give him a jingle at the house this weekend. john - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2001 06:31:57 -0600 From: Jon Filina Subject: Re: More charging problems with the 240D Jim polished his suit of armor in preparation for battling the beast and wrote: > I haven't gotten the shotgun out yet ;) If ya shoot too soon, you'll find out you wasted ur ammo.. > Where in the heck are "6" grounds?!?! I doubt this is really your problem, but just in case... If you look at the time this message is being sent, it's when I just got home from work. The last day of the month, for us air freight types, is usually a late one. Tonite was a bit later than normal. If your going to tackle this over the weekend, I thought I'd better answer your before I caught some z's... OK, number 3 is on the driver's side wheel well just behind the passenger's side headlight. Number 4 is behind the instrument cluster under the dash. I didn't mess with this one. I figured if that was bad I had more problems than the car was worth.... Numbers 5 & 6 are in the truck. They are both pretty flimsy and most likely not a cause of your problem. If you pull the plastic liner from the driver's side of the trunk, you'll see a few wires attached to a sheet metal screw near the antenna. The other one is just behind the tail light assembly on the passenger's side. The worst corrosion I could find on Mathilde looked like a milky white film. That was hardly enough to cause various electrical circuits to shut down but I cleaned them up with emory cloth to be safe. > I actually got the dash out a few months ago and never > pushed it all the way back in. So I'm imagining that I > will get to the headlight switch that way right? Or did > you get at it from underneath? My mechanic is the one that pulled the headlight switch. My Haynes manual sheds no light on the subject, which is one of the reasons I don't like them, but it appears that you'll have to remove the underdash panel to get to it. I think there is a large nut holding it in place, like 17 mm or so. That piece of information may be completely bogus, but I think that's what Dennis mentioned to me. At any rate, checking the connections on the headlight switch appear to be a good idea due to the way MB designed the current flow. I think Dennis had pulled the instrument cluster when he removed the headlight switch, which may be the path you'd have to take. > As I mentioned before, quite frequently I will turn the > key to the glow position... wait for the glow light to > go out and try to start the car. Could a bad key switch be causing my > battery to not charge? That is not the problem I had, but the solution may be the same. Does your key click crisply between the different positions? Mine didn't, but that wasn't the major problem. The way Bosch designed their alternators, a bad ignition switch can give indications of a bad charging system. That's it, I've hit rock bottom. I've got to get to bed. Good luck! Jon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2001 11:03:04 -0600 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: Mercedes Questions What are we gonna do with you, John? If the fan blows, and the air comes out of the correct vents, but it just doesn't blow hot anymore, my money's on the monovalve. Replacement innard is dirt cheap (20 or 30 bucks? Maybe less), and extremely easy to install. Worked wonders for my 85 300D. If your system is not blowing air, or it always comes out of the defrost vents no matter what you set the system to, you probably won't get off as cheap. George Murphy is pretty much the recognized authority on these climate control systems, and he is usually extremely helpful and generous with diagnostic suggestions. He also can sell you repair parts, where the dealer would only want to sell larger, more expensive units. Try George_Murphy-at-compuserve.com (give him a few days to reply), or (423) 482-9175. I think I got my replacement monovalve from him. Not sure if Rusty, Randy, and the rest of the usual suspects can get that part. The heat will still work to some degree even if this pump does not run. Steve Morelen >From: "Richard F.
