Jay, OK, you asked for it..... ;) Ford offered the Mazda 2.0 liter non-turbo diesel in the Escort AND Mercury Lynx from 1984-1987. For some reason the '84-'86 engines were all the same design but some significant changes were made for the '87 model year. Injectors/glow plugs/wiring, etc. were changed. So mine was kind of an orphan. VERY hard to get parts from Ford or Mazda. I also have an engine out of an '86 Lynx wagon for parts. That's when I found out about the differences ;) The engine was beautiful. It had plenty of power for that little Escort. It had a 5spd overdrive transmission. I got, get this, 61 mpg on a trip to Florida with it!!! I went from S.E. Wisconsin to Ft. Meyers and back on $60 of fuel! Incredible! At 120k miles I pulled the engine and replaced the timing belt, idler pulley, water pump, injector pump timing belt, and a few other things. Then at 189k miles the body just started falling apart and it wasn't safe to drive. I still have it in the driveway waiting for an opportunity for a transplant. Escort diesels are hard to come by. I could probably use a '87 gas model but then I'd have to change out the dash & wiring harnesses, etc. Anything that was not compatible. * Soap Box ON* I think these vehicles would still be in production today were it not for our *friends* at GM for producing that wonderful modified gas 350 diesel. I'm STILL angry at them for that one. How far does an engineer have to have his head up his a** to know that the bearings, etc. of a gas engine can't handle the MUCH higher compression of a diesel engine?!?!?! I won't buy ANYTHING from GM... I firmly believe they *killed* the diesel market for passenger cars and they lost a customer for life! * Soap Box OFF* ;) Jim/ '83 240 D '87 Escort Diesel jay miller wrote: > Just curious: who manufactured your diesel engine, what size is it and was > it offered throughout the USA prior to and after 1987? > Jay Miller < coalhill-at-hotmail.com > > > _________________________________________________________________ > Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 18:17:28 -0600 From: "Vernon Tuck" Subject: Re: '87 Ford Escort Diesel?? If you don't mind me butting into your conversation about transplant candidates for your diesel engine, I don't think you have to change the dash or wiring to do a gas->diesel conversion. If the gas car had a coil ignition, just hook the coil + (hot) wire to the glow plug harness. Wire a push button into this circuit. Another + wire will have to go to the injector pump fuel flow solenoid, which should be hot only when the ignition key is on. To start the car just hold down the push button for 10 seconds then release. You don't really need a glow plug light. Just don't sit on the button too long. You should transplant the transmission along with the engine since the ratios are taller. Of course, the above does not take into account any EPA issues which may be of concern. That's why we are all here. ;) I just like the glow plug indicator on the dash. Also the relay does stay on longer than the light on the dash I believe. It does on my MB anyway. So it would be desirable to have the correct relay rather than a push button. It would work though. I'll think about that. I can move the whole engine/tranny when I do the transplant. That's the way I took it out of the car when I did the timing belt replacement. Just 3 motor mounts and the entire transverse unit came out with a cherry picker. Real nice to work on ;) Jim/ Vernon Tuck wrote: > If you don't mind me butting into your conversation about transplant > candidates for your diesel engine, I don't think you have to change the dash > or wiring to do a gas->diesel conversion. > > If the gas car had a coil ignition, just hook the coil + (hot) wire to the > glow plug harness.
