I figured the battery idiot light being lit was a result of the shorted wires and the slow shutdown was caused by separation of one or more vacuum lines in the trunk. I think the newer W201, W124, and W126's all use an electric solenoid to shut the engine down. "Mathilde" is sitting in the driveway now and looks like a fastback!!! Just seal it up with some duct tape, tape some tail lights on and go for it... :) BTW, I saw Fritz today. I bought the '83 Ranger Diesel from his owner. He's looking good. Euro lights, Racor fuel filter, door panel fixed. Looks great. I'm out installing a stereo in the ranger, going to clean it up and get it ready for use. Nice little truck. I just bought a 1982 300DT It has an oil leak toward the front that I just can't seem to find anywhere. Any suggestions? Also, I'm having trouble with it wanting to run rough when I crank it and coughs white smoke. Could it be the glow plugs? How do I test them?? Last question. The car wants to shift gears too quick, it appears that way to me. It appears to shift at 7mph then again around 15-17 mph then the last time I feel it shift is around 21mph. How can I adjust the shifting?? I'm new to the MB diesel engines and series of cars, but if you need to know anything about Chevy 6.2 Diesels, just ask, I've owned one for the past few years. Get all the oil and grease off, and it will be that much easier to identify the source. There are fluorescent dye kits available from Eastwood if you really get stuck. You put the dye in the oil and observe the engine under a UV light... It's a good idea to replace the glow plugs, so you start with a known quantity. Try glowing the engine twice before you start, that might help. You pretty much always have to glow twice when the whether gets cold. Then, make sure that all the glow plugs are working. Also, if you are unsure of the last time it was done, adjust the valves. All these things will go a long way toward making it easier to start. I also have an engine block heater to make it easier to start on the cold mornings. The other benefit to the block heater is that you can have heat sooner after you start the car, which is nice if you live somewhere cold. Also, when cold starting the motor, you may want to try giving a _little_ extra fuel when cranking by stepping on the accelerator pedal. It also wouldn't hurt to check the injection timing, either. Also let the motor sit for a few extra seconds after the glow plug light goes out. The circuit stays on for about 1.5-2 minutes when cold starting. I always let it run for a minute or two before I drive it off anyway. I give it a little fuel when starting to help get fuel through the injector system and blow the air out faster, hold it at a pretty good RPM until it runs smooth. I think it is because fuel runs down through the system when it sits over night, and air gets slowly sucked in. I check the glow plugs by going out side at night, raising the hood, and looking at the wires that run between the glow plugs. The wires should be glowing, too, after a little while. If not, you prolly got a bad glow plug. > [Original Message] > From: > To: > Date: 1/20/2002 11:04:12 AM > Subject: Re: Re: New to list > > Here is what I've done so far today. So I must offer my 1972 220d 4 speed for sale to create a parking space for it. It is a good looking specimen of the 115 chassis. Has a new paint job by Maaco Grayish. New clutch and pressure plate. Practically new tires. Original radio comes with. Spare driver seat backrest. New clutch master and slave cyl. Brakes have been replaced with in the past year and parking brake cable All my manuals and spare parts. ( A trunk full ) Known problems: (the never got roundtuits) Horn. Rip in the driver seat back rest (I am including a good backrest) Heater blower. Fuel gauge stops a 1/4 tank instead of going to E.. couple of minor parking lot hits on the new paint. Asking $2000 OBO. And please do offer. Be willing to take 201 chassis parts or 601 engine part in a partial trade. Also looking for a decent cutting torch, arc welder. What do you have? Willing to deal/trade. The only thing I will not trade for is boats or other cars (no space for them). I am getting some pictures together and will send them to you on request. The car is in the Puget sound area Washington state (Bremerton). I could deliver to SeaTac airport. This thing is a tank and VERY reliable, she has never let me down. If you would like it shipped I can look into it. This car has started up below 32 degrees with not a problem. I hate to lose this car but I would like to focus my efforts on the 201 chassis, plus I just do not have the space anymore. I think you will not be disappointed. I also own a 82 300D-T and among other things, it had the same problem yours had. More than likely, the gasket between the oil filter mount and the block needs replacement. I had this replaced shortly after I got the car and it fixed 70% of the oil leakage. Unfortunately my experience trying to fix all the rest of the oil leaks in this 20 year old car is like hitting all the gophers in that old arcade game. Your shifting and rough running / smoke sounds normal for this car, given the age and perhaps 200k plus mileage on it. Would suggest that you search the archives on this list, particularly the page: http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/Survival-Guide-Diesel-Benz.html These cars are meticulously constructed and designed by clever Germans and take some TLC and getting used to if you've never owned one before, but it will grow on you and I'm sure you'll love it, especially if you're used to driving Diesel rigs.
