May she rest in peace. sounds like you got a great deal all the way around. The turbo Diesel makes a big difference. The 126 chassis is pretty nice. lots of room. Glad to hear it worked out ok. I'm going to email the guy on the BMW that I'm going to pass... sounds like that car could be a very, very expensive acquisition. The guy admits to dropping $1k on a timing belt already. Looking at the alldata site, or whatever it's called, I think there were over 250 service tech bulletins on that car... :) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ (Amsoil, Amazon.com, Unix and FSJs) Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 16:13:44 -0600 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: more on the Diesel beemers... > Thanx again for the info on the BMW Diesel. Stoopid feds don't make it attractive to manufacturers to let us have any, though. I read the other day that diesels have about 40% of the market in Europe. Exhaust particulates are the "undesirable" over here, so we have to make do with less efficient spark engines. :-( Alec ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Feb 2002 14:20:02 -0800 From: "Derickam AA" Subject: Farewell to the old hello to the "newer" Hello, It has been a while since I have checked in, lately y'all have been keeping me busy reading your posts. I have diesel events in my life to report: Thanks to Ebay, "Panzer" (1972 220d) has a new owner in Omak WA. And thanks to Ebay I have another 190d. Take a look if ya want. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1690294316 I knew at this price some work was going to need to be done. Well she arrived last week and my assumptions were correct. The engine and tranny are dirty but strong and function proper, I will need to replace many rubber seals as she has been sitting in a barn for a while. For some reason the carpets/floor boards were saturated with water. So right now she is garaged with carpets up on the clothes line and doors open. Most the accessorys do not work either so my guess is some motors are going to have to be broken loose and refurbed. Most of the work is labor intensive but not expensive. She is drivable! So all the little bells and whistles may be fixed at my leisure. Unlike some cars, I came up with a name right away "Charity" case. So far she appears to be a diamond in the rough though. My wife just shook her head as I drove it in. I told her just to ignore my complaining about this thing don't work, or I am gonna have to rebuild this thing or that... It is a sickness.... ;) Derick Amburgey Automated Control Specialist Port Of Seattle/SeaTac Airport/Satellite Train System Amateur Radio Callsign: K7DXX Mercedes Benz Club Of America Northwest: 1985 Mercedes 190D "Tuti" 1984 Mercedes 190D "Charity" _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 17:48:12 -0600 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: Farewell to the old hello to the "newer" > -----Original Message----- > It is a sickness.... ;) > > > > Derick Amburgey > Automated Control Specialist > Port Of Seattle/SeaTac Airport/Satellite Train System > Amateur Radio Callsign: K7DXX > Mercedes Benz Club Of America Northwest: > 1985 Mercedes 190D "Tuti" > 1984 Mercedes 190D "Charity" > Uh oh. Now THAT sounds like fun. (Bimmer/cars; Beemer/Bikes) Though a former BMW owner, mid-pack racer and enthusiast, I'd tell you to stay 'way away. The TD special interest group within BMW CCA has even faded away for lack of interest. Two years: 85 & 86 in the US, not many sold, and absolutely no dealer interest in getting parts should make you leery, wary and wiser. The pluses are largely in the 5 series chassis and handling; superior to the W123 Benz, but that's all. A/c suffered as an add-on afterthought, and the automatic was never a strong unit. My old mechanic took me through the pre-purchase thinking about the 524TD, with the Specs in front of us. While the 524 engine would struggle in Western PA to reach 21mpg, the rest of the vehicle would require high-dollar maintenance for its bells & whistles. Stay with the gal you know how to dance with...the 123.
