It would rapidly increase power. There were some actual benefits to doing it with minimal risks... if memory serves me correctly. anyone recall the article? I doubt that any increase in power in this drive line would be an issue. The Benz drive line could easily deal with even 30% more power without worry. As far as being in a hurry... well, there are times when getting into traffic becomes a serious issue, especially up here in the Seattle area... you could sit and wait a LONG time for an opening. My '99 Grand Cherokee can jump up to 60mph and join the traffic flow if I've got as little as 8 to 10 car lengths on the highway open... If I'm pulling out with my Ranger Diesel I have to wait, and wait, and wait... and there'd better be no one in sight for at least half a mile... :) shoot, a guy's Latte could go cold waiting that long around here... john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 08:05:02 -0800 From: James Molloy Subject: Re: 300sd finally starts Robert, Congratulations on getting your 300SD started. I am once again inspired to attenmpt the same with our $200 1979 300SD. I bought the car about two years ago sight unseen for the OM617A engine. I had visions of transplanting the engine into one of our M180 powered 404.1 Unimogs. Once we saw how "intact" the entire car was (and with only 175K miles), Emilie and I decided to restore the car instead. Like you, we have just added a new battery. I had tested the circuits to the glow plugs last year but I am not sure I have done it correctly. The timer and indicator light on the instrument cluster seem to work and the engine does turn over freely. The engine will build oil pressure with cranking and the tachometer also functions. We are missing one control from the dash. We have an empty round hole (~15mm) to the left of the steering column. While I do not have an owners manual for the car, I would guess it is a rotary throttle control knob similar to our '76 300D and our '59 190D. I am unsure if that control being missing has any role in why the car will not fire. Another question is the location of the fuel filters. The obvious one is the metal cannister unit at the left front corner of the engine. Is there supposed to be a second smaller filter elsewhere in the system? Finally, does anyone have any knowledge of an accessory fuel tank that would have been mounted on teh front portion of the floor of the truck of these 116 bodied cars? Our car has mounting holes and a patent fuel line for such a tank. Any photos out there of such and animal? Thanks and take care.
