I should start by saying that I don't know if the same device is used on the wagons - I'm referring to an electric sensor that literally sits in the tank, bathed in fuel. When the float starts to get gunked up with diesel and/or sediment, it doesn't read correctly. When my 80 240D started reading empty despite having fuel in the tank, we removed the first-aid kit on the back deck (and the cavity it sits in), and removed the sending unit with a large (LARGE) socket, which fit right down on the top. I mean, we're probably talking 27mm or larger here - it's been a while since I've owned the car so I don't actually remember. Anyway, some WD-40 to clear the muck out of the float's pathway and I was back in business. Any wagoneers (sorry, dieseljohn) out there who can add to this? - - Matt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 19:49:57 -0600 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: W123 fusebox and fuel filters If your 78 is like my 85, the secret is to pull back a foot or so of the "weatherstripping". It's rubber over a decent metal strip. The metal provides the grip, but it's easy enough to just pull it back, starting at the edge, and bend it out of the way. That provides enough clearance to get the fuse cover back down there without being a contortionist. Then the seal just pushes right back on. Learned this one from my MB mechanic years ago. Your filters don't sound familiar, but mine was an 85 300D turbo, so that's my excuse. ;-) Congrats on the new car. You're gonna love it. They should have it. You might want to just pull the sending unit and confirm though. It's accessible from the top of the tank, I believe. (Not sure on the wagon, but it is on the 300SD, behind/under the back seat.) Check the tank screen from there also. LOL! Two things: The cover does have a right-side-up, with two little vertical flanges that must be, uh, down, (I think!) Look at the inside of the cover for the flanges, and at the fuse panel for the "sockets" they fit into. It also helps to pull the screws up as high as they can go. Also, next time you take it off, do it slowly and watch how it comes out. Installation, as they say, is the reverse... It sounds like that third filter was added by someone. There is actually a third normal one that is the first one the fuel sees, (the screen in the tank.) It does sometimes get plugged. Plugged filters will cause a loss of power at highway speeds, and are good to replace periodically.
