You can intercept the vacuum system at different fittings and isolate where it's leaking. When Benzes get this old, the rubber diaphrams (and every other rubber part, it seems!) start to degrade and crack. All the lock cylinders, the engine shutoff actuator, the A/C valves and all the other vacuum components all seem to be vulnerable, and a Mityvac helps find the culprit! Good luck! Since my first posting on the subject the central locking of the car has been failing too. I'm off tomorrow to my local friendly MB specialist, to have my vacuum looked at; lucky to have one just three blocks from home ;-3) Cheers, Ron, on the banks of the Paraguay River. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2002 13:52:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Jayesh Nayak Subject: Conversion to turbo Hi All; I own a 84' 190D 2.2 and wuold like to know if anyone has info of conversion to a turbo diesel. As I sit and plan my last few days on the wrong coast... thoughts of Diesels cross my mind, distracting me from my homework... In a moment of delusion (or was it clear thinking?) I deleted all the emails about the tempting Diesel powered Jeep that lay 3 hours south... in the meantime I plot courses to look at one closer to the airport... The logistics of either deal involve close to a grand more in transportation costs... and I have to deal with the evil rust issue... fuel costs rising, I may commence the search once I arrive on the right coast, or is that the correct cost? ;) confusing ain't it? Ah, the adventures of life as a Diesel nut... I'm planning on visiting at least three more states before I leave... I'll exit PA, go across NY, up to CT and through NYC back to NJ... So this adventure will net me 5 new states to my list... that will leave AK, NH, Maine and VT as the only states I haven't been to yet. If I had more time, or were even crazier, I could probably visit NH and VT too... :) I'll save that for a fall trip sometime. john - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com often via PINE on Linux ** (prefer plain text emails please!) ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. ...and remember, leaving life without Jesus just isn't recommended... - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Apr 2002 08:28:16 US/Central From: acordova-at-texas.net Subject: Re: Diesel thoughts... > If I had more time, or were even crazier, I could probably visit NH and > VT too... :) I'll save that for a fall trip sometime. > > john > If you only get one chance to see them, that's most definitely the time to do it. Although I'm grateful to have now been in Texas for 26 years, I'm originally from Massachusetts, and I remember our regular visits to New Hampshire and the autumns in New England. Everyone should see that before they go. Don't worry, John, we all still have our eyes out for an older diesel MB G- Wagen at the right price. ;-) Alec ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Apr 2002 19:44:56 -0700 From: john meister Subject: the CJ5 with the Diesel in PA Contacted the guy... after getting the details I'm not impressed. It sounds like it could be a hack job. It did not come with the Perkins Diesel, someone retrofitted it. It has a T-90 (heavy duty 3 speed), but more likely a lower grade three speed, and a Spicer Model 18 xfr case with twin sticks and a PTO. The low range is only around 2.0. There is an issue with the frame, the idler arm is loose on the pass side... very common problem with the Kaiser Jeeps, the frames would crack around the steering components... happened on my '67 Wagoneer too. Anyway, talked to the guy, seemed nice enough, but for $2,500 I'll buy the Cummins Turbo Diesel that was just offered to me again in WA state for $1,250 and find something to install it in. :) john - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com often via PINE on Linux ** (prefer plain text emails please!) ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. ...and remember, leaving life without Jesus just isn't recommended... - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #745 *********************************
