Many times he was less then jobber pricing! Excellent parts too. No Diesel Benz in my stable right now. Decided to forego the challenge of stuffing the Cummins into a project, so if anyone up in the PNW is interested in that nice little Cummins TD let me know... $1250 or so for the engine complete... runs sweet too... john in snohomish - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com often via PINE on Linux ** (prefer plain text emails please!) ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. ...and remember, leaving life without Jesus just isn't recommended... - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 May 2002 02:32:13 -0500 From: Jon Filina Subject: Re: MB manuals Ralph wrote: > I happen to be in the market for some 123 manuals myself. I haven't seen a reply to your message, so here goes... I can't speak for the W123 MB CD's, but do have the W126 ones. The only company publishing manuals for my '84 300SD is MB. Like the W123's, they are only available on CD. They are lousy! Why do I say "lousy"? For $130, you get all but the automatic transmission manual. They are in PDF format and appear to be only useable on a Windows based system. I prefer Linux, but have a Windows partition so I can access them. There is no index, but I don't believe the printed copies have one either. The screen quality is poor, at best. Printing the different chapters should give you readable information of the procedure you are interested in. Whether they cover all the areas that the printed versions do, I don't know as I've never seen the hard copies. They don't appear to, though. I would say it depends on how much work you will do yourself. If you are familiar with German cars, in general, and are a light to medium DIY'er, the Haynes "Mercedes-Benz Diesel 123 Series" manual (63012(697)) is pretty good. If you want the last word, but really have to look for it, get the MB CD. Before I got my 240D in 1998, I'd driven VW's for some 20 years. Robert Bentley makes the best shop manuals I've ever seen. Unfortunately they don't do MB.... The Hayne's manual served me perfectly well for my 240D, but they do not make one for the W126. I understand Bentley is coming out with one for the W124's, so a W126 may be available in the future. When they do, I'll pay the $60 or so and get it. The CD will then be a backup... You might be able to find used printed W123 manuals on eBay. If the Haynes is not to your liking, that's probably the way to go. Any info for a newbie is > greatly appreciated! we've been using a pair of diesel benzes (1977 300D and 1985 300D Turbo diesel, both WS123 series cars) here in Albany year round for a couple of years now. with good tires they work well year round. for snow tires we have used Nokia Hakkas and Bridgestone Blizzaks with good results. the Nokias seem to last longer, but at current pricing they cost a lot more. the Nokia is probably the better deep snow tire, and the Blizzak is probably a better ice tire. in the northeast, WS123s are getting pretty tired. when we picked up the 85, it was pretty ratty and we got it with the expection that it'd make 2-3 years, which is about what we're gettin gout of it. the 77 is a car we brought up from Florida; it was immaculate when it came up here 4-5 years ago, and is now starting to show the results of exposure to salt. it'll be hard to find a clean looking northern 123 unless you can find a babied car that's been garaged winters all its life. richard - -- Richard Welty rwelty-at-suespammers.org Averill Park Networking rwelty-at-averillpark.net Unix, Linux, IP Network Engineering, Security rwelty-at-krusty-motorsports.com 518-573-7592 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 May 2002 12:19:05 -0400 From: Rajeev Wijesinghe Subject: Re: diesel-benz-digest V1 #759 YES!! It was parked with about ten other motorhomes of various vintage and styles, but I just happened to notice that it was odd looking (this comes from a guy who is still trying to sell an Ultravan). It was a MB, it was quite new, and it was from Germany. I stopped and took some pictures, but I only had the 35mm with me not the digital, so I cannot post them yet. And, I talked to the owner. It has a truck cab with a motorhome body. It has a 3l 5 cylinder diesel engine (non turbo). The truck looks like a 1.5ton truck, he told me that the total weight was 4.3 tons; he knew the weight because, here comes the bad part if you were thinking of looking for one, he shipped it over himself. He shipped it from (I think he said) Frankfurt to Florida and was driving a massive loop through America. It was a very nice looking Motorhome, but I doubt that the used market is going to be flooded with them when I am ready to retire. If anyone is interested I will post the pictures after I get them processed and scanned (yes, I process my own film, but it takes some time to get energetic about spending an evening in an unheated darkroom) MB content was that it was simply a MB model I have not seen before... It got me thinking, is the guy that was selling the MB vans still here? =========================================================== Rajeev L.
