I can't tell if the problem is with the vacume activated switch or with the electric climate control switches. Any BTDT help on what usually fails? I was thinking of disconnecting the vacume switch and manually moving the rod when I want to change the direction. There are a row of electrically operated vacuum valves located above the radio behind the wood trim piece. These valves apply vacuum to the appropriate vacuum actuator(s) to move the various flaps to direct the air flow to the correct outlet(s). I have, over time, replaced almost all of the ones in my '84 300D. The MB climate control maintenance manual helps to identify the probable culprit valve. I generally use a hand-operated vacuum test pump to confirm a faulty valve. Hope this helps.
