I tried using the compressor that is a threaded rod with hooks at each end. After I noticed that the threaded rod was BENDING under the stress I decided to take it to the professionals. I bought a spring from Rusty for $30! Then had a local mechanic install for me. Saved me a bundle and didn't risk my life ;) Unless I had a death wish I wouldn't attempt it again! Well Folks, there's good news and there's bad news... ;) First the good news. Loostening the fuel filter and priming *helped* but it still wouldn't start. But I could hear it trying. Then loostened the "banjo" fitting returning from the pump hoping to get fluid into the pump. Then some cranking and pumping the accelerator she started! I drove it last night and this morning and she's running good. I have some "Diesel Purge" that I need to run through it but that will have to wait.... because the bad new is.... I've been noticing that my seat has been "listing" to the left. I find myself leaning against the center post. I thought the seat springs were broken or it was something else in the seat. WRONG!!! The floor boards have rusted through and I'm dangerously close to falling through the floor! I'm really bummin' now guys. I just spent $450 on complete new brake system. Then adjusted the valves. Just get ready to run her again and now this. Two questions: First why does pumping the foot feed on an injected engine help? And second are there suppliers of floorboard panels that I can buy to weld in to keep this thing going? If the answer to question #2 is NO, then does anyone need a parts car with a nice engine and complete new brake system?!?! ;) Jim/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 19:04:23 -0500 From: "Jim Hoffman" Subject: Re: Priming the fuel system... SUCCESS! and Aaarrgggghhhhhh!!! Jim, I played with an inexpensive 280C and learned about fiberglass on it. Floorboards are of minor importance but making sure the seats do not fall through at 60 mph is very important. You can build up new floor pans with fiberglass or tin or a combination. Pre-formed floorpans are also available to weld in. That is the only way to go if you are serious about restoring this classic. One day, when I popped the trunk latch, the bottom of trunk (w/gas tank) hit the ground, it was quickly glued back together with fiberglass. I was getting pretty good. Numerous other parts got patched, too. Unfortunately, my finishing and painting skills were not great so the car looked best at night. I junked it when one side began to sag and I realized that the sub-frame mounts had rusted through. Rust is often terminal. These are uni-body cars; that means the body is the frame. As rust progresses, the car becomes increasingly unsafe both to you and to others around you. Finding a less rusted example that might benefit from your engine, brakes, exhaust, etc. might be a less expensive, less dangerous route than pursuing rust repairs. I remember seeing them for rent in the back pages of the Performance Products catalog (a lovely thing with lots of exploded drawings, although pricing somewhat higher than Rusty). Just for the record, Rusty replied privately to my earlier comment. Although the spring compressors do not appear on his website, and he may not offer them for sale, he does have them available for rent. But I think Derick had decided to go ahead and use this as an excuse to acquire another tool. Merry Christmas, Derick.
