Ho John! Boy you've hit upon one of my peeves and greatest fears! That "public saftey" check point thing. They've been using them off and on here in Seattle for a few years now and I don't quite know how they are pulling them off legaly, obviously they are, but everything I know about the law and the constitution (which is a bit more then the average person) leads me to believe that they are in direct conflict with the consitution. For those who don't know what these are. These are random rolling police "roadblocks" stationed at intersections and thurofares thought out a city, where as anyone wishing to pass through must stop, have thier "papers" examined and in some cases have thier cars searched. Usually they are done under the guise of "drunken driving awarness programs" but it's more of a case of "throw the net wide and see what you catch." If you do not wish to "pass" through and turn around a few blocks ahead of the roadblock, there are chase units positioned to track you down, under the assumtion that "you would not head away from a police roadblock if you had nothing to hide" Scary stuff... Makes one wonder where we are headed and on a philosphical side note. Makes me think the terrorists have already won, when we start doing this kind of crazy stuff... They've got us jumping at shadows and allowing our personal freedoms to slip slowly by... Anyway, enough of my bandstanding. It is smaller, more flexible and gives bags of torque. For everyday use I have a 1975 300D, which has the mean green and special cables for the starter power supply made of fat welding cable with soldered on lugs. Battery power is two optima red tops. It cranks really well. It is a great vehicle for jump starting as it also has a 120 amp alternator (Bosch). Tips for installation, get the set of allen socket thingies from sears and all sorts of extensions. Those allen sockets are useful everywhere on the 300D engine. I have read that a 300D Turbo will sub for the 300D Starter and spins faster (STandard Disclaimer here). I know that my 300D Turbo spins faster and starts much easier than my 300TD! If this were my car I would definitely explore this possibility. Second: I have heard mixed results on buying rebuilt electrical components such as alternators and starters. if this were my situation I would take the starter to a reliable auto electric shop to rebuild. Luckily, there is one in my town that I respect. I suppose buying a rebuilt from Rusty would be safe... Good luck!
