I'm a manufacturing engineer, and journeyman machinist.Virtually all the people I know that are unemployed here are professional and skilled, from IT,manufacturing, and business...several IT people have left the state. I lived in New Mexico from 82 to 2000.From 92 to 99 I started and ran a small R & D machining business in Albq.Moved to the Seattle area in mid 2000.(Love Seattle...it was only the job market that drove me off; now its worse). Was offered a job at Boeing,as a manf.eng.,but the salary was only $25K yr...the janitors make more than that...I couldn't believe it,nor could those familiar with Boeing. Got a certificate from Univ. of N.M continuing ed. in C++ programming ...can't even GIVE that away.("IT Samaritans",a voluteer group of unemployed IT people in Denver, wouldn't even send me a "No Thanks" note.) (couldn't get any offers at the "high tech" job fair(s) in Bellevue) Left the Seattle area for a job back in Boulder,December 2000.I was the Quality Coordinator for a small contract machining business.I restored a very decayed QA system back to ISO 9002 compliance...passed the registrar's audit with 6 minor non conformances...4 of which were the owner/manager's and out of the scope of my authority.I was also the shop welder, too,in addition to the routine QA stuff. And now?...at 52 in March?...been thinking of finishing a degree in music composition and arranging(been doing alot of music copyist work)...also thinking of starting my machining business as a support base for product developement(motorcycle related...and to support my vintage M/C hobby)... thinking of small retail business as well. A CFO friend in San Diego was laid-off a few months ago...a buy-out and re- organize thing. This is a strange market. My skill set is quite diverse and actively teaching and consulting part time keeps me in the industry, have several promising leads, LW I'll have something in the near future. I hope list members don't mind this off topic discussion, but MB owners in general tend to be skilled professionals and may relate to this. I think this is an excellent place to help each other, with certain limits of course. Please bear with us and just delete the msgs, I'm not planning on starting a new list just for unemployeed Diesel Benz owners. ;) MLC:(mandatory list content ;) - I'm going to get the deposit for the 280Z today and will secure my '85 190D. :) One more week before the kid gets his money. My company's stock had gone down from $96 to fifty cents. They were responding with massive layoffs. My hands hurt with tendinitis from 20 years of programming. So my wife & I went out last year and bought an 8-unit apartment building. It didn't make any money, but as long as I was working, we didn't care. All the money was put back into the building. My not so copious free time was put into doing landlord paperwork and fixing toilets. Now it's pretty well all fixed up, and should give us $2k/month. Almost enough to keep us off the welfare rolls. My company continued laying off. I kept sweating. I worked extra hours, just to make sure they'd keep me until.... ...Last Friday at 10:00AM. We closed on another building. 52 Units. This one should keep us solidly in the black even if I get laid off.
