Had a heck of a time getting it back started even as I followed the MB maintenance procedure to pump via hand pump (new Bosch style). Ended up disconnecting four of the five injector fuel feed lines at the injector. And cranked it over figuring the injector pump would be pushed to prime. I persisted and got it started but it ran rough, like not all cylinders were firing properly. Proceeded to get it on highway for 20 miles and it runs great now. Battery and starter got a good work out, though. QUESTION: When I do work in the future any tricks to keep system from what appears to be air binding? Should I have filled the new filter up with some fuel before I installed it? (it sits under and screws in from above, sort of looks like a standard small lube oil filter you see on other gas autos) Please any advice as if I have to go through that every time I work on the fuel system...oh boy. Amsoil might have something similar. (John should be able to answer that.) Like you've discovered, anything to displace that air should help, and with the orientation on good old MB diesels, it's easy enough to handle. However, those hand pumps are infamous for failing over the years, even if you don't use them. You might have thought you were pumping but if the pump was bad then you were doing very little to nothing. On the older cars there used to be a bleed screw to open when pumping the pump to get all of the air out of the filter and lines. I don't remember about the screw on filter assemblies, but the older canister type filters have a bleed screw on top of them. If there is a small bolt on top of where the fuel filter screws into, that is the bleed screw. Take out the screw, pump the hand pump until you get fuel out of the hole, then replace and tighten the screw as the fuel is coming out. The fuel filter is now full and primed. The car should crank right over with a bit of coughing from the little bit of air that is probably in the fuel lines. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-diesel-benz-at-digest.net [mailto:owner-diesel-benz-at-digest.net]On Behalf Of Tom Scordato Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2003 2:24 PM To: diesel-benz-digest-at-digest.net Subject: Vapor Bound Hello Yesterday following some advice, I changed my main diesel fuel filter in a 1977 300D. I've used the Diesel Fuel Modifier to fill the filter, it's not as concentrated and is great for giving the injectors a good cleaning. The other two should be mixed.
