But it allows me to be a little more 'selective' in what I work on, at home. I still turn a few wrenches - just not for a living. I just got tired of the 'politics' working for dealerships/independents. Based on 'paying your dues' rather than your actual ability. Piss off the wrong service writer, etc and you 'starve', waiting on work while the 'suck-ups' get 'fed'. Anybody that has worked at a dealership can relate to what I am saying. That was the whole reason I started my own shop. Got burned out(on wrenching), after about 10 years. It is REALLY difficult to go work for someone else after being(sucessfully)self-employed, but if you don't enjoy it...... Now, I do my job(in a climate controlled enviroment), collect my check(same amount, each time), and enjoy life more. Allows more time to ENJOY wrenching(when the urge strikes). Wrenching is a 2 sided blade. You can do the job 'right' and run less hours OR cut a few corners(flat-rate/cheat)to run lots of hours(= lots of pay). I prefer to do it 'right'. Being able to collect the full labor rate(rather than a third - work for someone) allows me to take the extra time to do it 'right'. My definition of right? Like it was your car(that also has varying degrees - depends on the person). The good ones are more 'the exception' than the rule. I could really tell some stories of the techs at a certain North Dallas BMW/Ferrari dealership. One guy had his complete tool set in a fishing tackle box - no kidding. Of course the customer never knew if a master tech or a flunkie was working on his car - the labor rate was the same($64/hr). Mike asked: >My alternator on my '81 300SD went on my during my drive home today. >I seem to recall hearing on this list before that the brushes can be >replaced fairly easily? Is this true? If so, how does one do it? > The brushes on these Bosch alternators are mounted in a screw on "box" that includes the regulator. Take the one you have to your local parts house and order the identical one. You probably have a 65 amp alternator. I think my '81 240D had a 55 amp unit, but the heavier duty regulator "brush pack" worked. The cost should be $35-55. R&R is relatively simple. This is one job that I'd much rather do on my VW diesels. The alternator on those cars sits right up front. You remove the two screws holding the brush pack to the alternator, remove it, line up the new one, push it into place and screw it down. You can do it without bending over too much and you don't get dirty. The MB's are replaced the same way, but the alternator is not on top. You have to get under the car and play contortionist. It's not hard, just a little awkward. And you will get dirty... A lesson I learned from my VW's that has carried over to my MB's is to replace the brush pack once. The second time, replace the alternator. You might get away with a third replacement, but you are sure to have some deep scoring of the armature by that time. All of the above should only be done once you've confirmed the regulator/brush pack is the culprit. Make sure your battery is ok, the ground strap is sound and the connections to the alternator are ok. Take a look at the alternator while the engine is running. Is there any wobble in the pulley? Is the belt loose? Is there any odd noise coming from the alternator? If you suspect the belt, tighten or replace it and see if starts to charge. Put a VOM meter across the battery and it should be charging at around 14.3 volts. If the regulator or brushes are bad, it would read closer to 12 volts. If you notice a good amount of wobble, or hear grinding noises, the bearings in the alternator could be bad which would mean getting a new unit. I don't know about the Bosch's on the MB's, but the VW ones had bearings on one end of the shaft and a nylon cup at the other. In the case of my Jetta, the cup wallowed out and caused quite a bit of wobble. If you don't have the factory manuals, or CD's, the Haynes manual for the W123 diesels should cover this procedure. The W126's have a lot of components the same as the W123's. It's well worth the $14.95 and that's not something I'd normally say about Haynes. The majority of their manuals are pretty sorry in my estimation. Let us know how you make out. John would prefer to have to replace the brush pack on his 190D than the ignition lock and so would I!
