Just a guess... who was doing a conversion of a diesel with an auto tranny to a manual. On the topic of home-brewed MB conversions, does anyone know if the engine bays in the W107's are wide enough or otherwise appropriately proportioned, to accommodate an OM617 or other diesel block? Yes, I fully realize you'd be taking the fun out of an SL that screams down the highway by putting a diesel in it... this is just one of those "if money, logic, and time were no objects" threads. I have to think that the diesel might be a halfway enjoyable performer, in the relatively lighter body... And another thing... someone even longer ago was posting about what to do with an extra instrument cluster from a W123, and suggested installing a clock movement, to make an interesting conversation piece for your desk? I don't know about that -- again, money, logic and time -- but if anyone wants to give the cluster from my old '80 240D a good home (I replaced it with one from an '82, which happened to have different MPH markings, 10mph increments instead of 15), let me know. The only catch is it's missing the colored plastic inserts for the idiot lights. (I had to scavenge them when I made a home-made "power to the glowplugs" indicator, when it became clear that I couldn't trust the timer relay's orange light... they were drawing constant current, stayed hot for too long and were getting unpredictably "eaten" inside the engine block. A new glow timer didn't seem to help.) Thought I'd ask around on the list before going the eBay route. FYI, when I did the swap, the odometer had stopped rolling, but I'm told that can be remedied (for anyone who might care). Well, that's a bit longer than I'd expected. Anybody care to bite? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Apr 2003 06:18:56 -0400 From: "Jim Steere" Subject: Re: flights of fancy - some light diesel content I'll bite.
