What bad did you hear about IPF? I've never heard anything bad about them, except the costs and maybe the ability to find them. I know ARB imports them, and I think dora (xj list) sells them. I'm pretty sure Central 4wd can get them too. I don't sell them because I couldn't buy enough to qualify as a distributor. So I have no financial interest in them... I just like them because they have the best quality lens and reflector that I've seen. The lens is thicker then other brands which makes it resistant to rock damage. The IPF bulbs work fine, haven't had one burn out yet. I've heard of others running other brands having trouble with bulbs and lenses, in fact sold one of my spare sets of IPF bulbs to a traveling XJ friend because his lens had chipped and he'd burned out his piaa's (I think), if I remember correctly he found the IPF bulbs to provide better light then what he had. (was it doug? he was on his way back from BC with a new stroker, heading down south somewhere... so many folks have visited the mold capital and I'm so bad with names... I don't even remember what year it was... I think phil and paul were here for the visit though... ;) Anyway, here's more info (pictures and install info mainly) on IPF's. I know that several folks from all the lists (FSJ, XJ and Diesel-Benz) have bought them because of my experience with them and they've all reported great things about them, so I'm real curious what bad you've heard. FWIW, I've had the IPF's on the little wagoneer, SuperDawg and two of my Mercedes Diesels... they're fantastic, no troubles, excellent light pattern, etc. ARB also had an H4 replacement loom that could be used so you could run higher wattage bulbs. I'm not sure if ARB-USA still has it or not. I think it ran about $60. I pulled the one from my son's '67 J3000 and have one on SuperDawg, couldn't fit it on my 300D. :( SuperDawg will have the H4 harness and the IPF replacement lenses as well as the IPF 800 driving lights (marshall factory fogs) and the IPF-ARB aux backup lights.. The IPF magic bulbs are great. I've got the Marine Green on my 190D benz right now and they're nice white crisp light. Pure white light, works great up here in the moldy northwest during rain at night. :) Major difference over the sealed halogens you get at the parts store... of course a flashlight might do better then some of those off the shelf types. ;) Anyway, here is an article I did on IPF from my cherokee america days: full install shots on the little wagoneer, etc. http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/IPF-replacement-HEADLIGHTS.html Here's the pix of the replacement on SuperDawg http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/Headlight-Replacement/ http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/H4-lamps/All-the-pix.html more XJ shots: http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/XJ-IPF-lights/ picture of them light up on superdawg: http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/40.83-amps_.jpg General directory of IPF and ARB lighting/harnesses, etc. http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/ In case you think only real Jeeps have round headlights: (actually this was on my '81 300D) http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/IPF-ROUND-H4 http://www.wagoneers.com/JEEPS/IPF/IPF-ROUND-H4/P7240030.JPG I got hooked on European style lights while living in Germany. I took the high beam (Bosch) lamps from one of my BMW's that had rusted out and mounted them on a Pinto. :) The IPF lights are even better then those. ;) The only regret I have about IPF lights is that when I sold my 300D I didn't take the time to put the stock lights back in and the guy put Euro lights on the 300D and sold or gave away the IPFs and they had the unavailable Magic J bulbs. :( john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 11:14:01 -0700 From: john Subject: RE: xj: Re: Lighting upgrades (long) Dora, that's a pretty good illustration... it's such a nice clean clear difference in real life... :) of course you'll see similar results with any good H4 replacement bulbs. The real benefit as far as I can tell with the IPF is the quality of the lens/reflector and bulbs. You'll get the same increase in light quality with cibie, hella, candella or piaa... overall quality and value, imo, goes to ipf. john At 11:43 AM 4/28/2003 -0500, Dora, Adventure 4WD wrote: >sorry for the small pic - but its a comparison of stock lighting to IPF >lighting on the same dark highway night in Florida froma customer of mine >http://www.adventure4wd.com/dora/stock-ipf.jpg > > >Dora-ble >2001 XJ w/8" Skyjacker Rock Ready and 33s >1997 TJ w/4" Superlift Rockrunner and 1.25" JKS and 35s >Adventure 4WD, Inc. I don't remember who it was but I'm wondering if it was successful.... The article that Mike Frank forwarded to the list talked about a heated tank, starting on diesel and switching over, blah, blah, blah... I thought someone else was talking about filtering/processing so you just dumped it in the tank and went. The weather is warming up so I'm planning on getting the hole in my floorpan fixed soon and might entertain trying this. The car isn't worth that much if it doesn't work ;) Thanks!
