I have one sitting here that I may use for the biodiesel filter... ;) They're fine on a gas engine but for a Diesel it just doesn't seem to be worth the trouble. The remote kind of bypass are ok, but careful where you put it... my wife did some mild off-roading (unintentional at a construction site) and split the line... then drove two miles home with no oil... was happy that I was an amsoil user... the engine wasn't damaged... :) later, john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 2003 22:11:19 -0700 From: Kevin Pekarek Subject: Re: just sold the '99 WJ On Tue, May 13, 2003 at 06:57:45PM -0700, john wrote: > amazing how it works when the ad is actually in the magazine... ;) > first person to contact us and come out and look at it... well, congrats. > hopefully we'll be able to replace it in a year or so... soon > as I get another full time job. :) naw. hold out a few years, and get one when jeep brings the diesel WJ into the states around 2006. The first time I used my Topsider, I wondered how I'd know when it was done. Watching the oil move, for the first time, from the dipstick tube to the can had me "oohhing and aawwing". After about 15 minutes I went back into the garage to check my toolbox. I heard this loud gurgling sound that reminded me of trying to suck the last remnents of a chocolate malt through a straw and realized that all the oil had been sucked out. I still get a kick out of it, 'cuz it's so cool! Since then, I have changed the oil once when I got the engine too warm and once when I hadn't emptied the can completely. This 300SD takes 8 quarts, which approaches the full capacity of the can. In the first case, the rubber hose had collapsed and I had to "pinch" the hose open. I thought I'd damaged the hose, but it's been fine since. In the second instance, oil got past the seals in the pump and I ruined a pair of pants. The topsider still leaks a little bit, but I wear the old pair of pants when I use it. I have considered switching to an electric pump, but the Topsider still does the job and is such a simple mechanism, just like the diesels I use it with, so I stay with it. >I'm not sure the Kumho 716HP4 tires are in the same league as E-code lights and >Topsiders, although they are a great bargain. Maybe the next thing will be >Leatherique. I keep telling myself I'm gonna try it. > Last October, when the score was 0-1 (in your favor), I needed tires on my 300SD. At your recomendation, I looked into the Kumho's. After some research, I found out that the Yokohama Avid Touring tires, priced about the same of maybe $5 more, had better ratings. I had a set of Yoko's put on by my local Discount Tire, at the princely sum of $280 out the door, and was completely amazed. They were noticably quieter and smoother than the Michelin X-One's they replaced. It almost felt like I'd gotten a new car! After around 12K, I still feel they were a great purchase. I have been a Michelin fan for years, but am now a fan of Yokohama's. So, the score was still 0-1. Leatherique.... That would be a draw. Dale Lockwood, who has been quoted on the Leatherique site as saying that their product is the best there is, is a member of the other list I am on. I have met him, and seen his cars. His nickname is "Dale the Detailer", for good reason. I have no doubt that Leatherique would put all other leather treatments to shame. The leather on my SD is beyond all hope though. I would like to find a W126 in the boneyard with MB Tex. Chances are good that it will be in good shape. As nice as the MB leather is, I think the MB Tex is superior. My 240D, aside from a wear spot on the driver's seat, looked good enough that I had to convince several people that it wasn't leather. Is the vinyl on the newer MB's as good as my '81? So, we are now 1-1, as opposed to the Dallas Mavericks who are 3-2 in the series (Way to go!!!). We'll have to see what the next greatest thing is. How can you top E-code headlights and the Topsider?
