Works amazingly well, doesn't have something hanging from somewhere that smells like food so the bears go after it when you go camping, and doesn't have that pungent smell that most air fresheners have if you are too close to them. Bounce sheets also work for mosquito control on a picnic table without the smoke (or smell) of a citronella candle. Not near as entertaining as a six pack and a bug zapper though. :) K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) 85 190D (2.2, 5spd) ------------------------------ Date: 19 May 2003 09:22:58 -0400 From: gary Subject: Re: 190D economy Speaking of timing... The manual states that there is only an "electronic" method of checking timing on the 601/2/3 . It uses a tester that costs more than the car. The older Benz could use a drip method of checking timing. But there is another method, a little more precise than your tuning by ear... Samstag(?) has a device which will lock the pump in position. http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes/mb601589052100.jpg It's about $42 and screws into the side of the pump. It is a spring loaded plunger device that drops into a hole in the timing cam. Set your engine at * degrees by the front pulley, and rotate the pump until the device drops in. Tighten. Done! You might be able to eyeball the hole with a service mirror and look for the detent in the cam. * degrees... original factory spec was 15*, but somewhere I read that a later revision changed it to 14*. - -Gary in Orlando On Mon, 2003-05-19 at 01:31, john wrote: > At 10:23 PM 5/18/2003 -0700, Kevin Pekarek wrote: > >On Sun, May 18, 2003 at 06:43:46PM -0700, john wrote: > > > my worst on my 190d has been about 30, best so far 35... right > > > now I'm at 1/2 tank and almost 270 miles... just adjusted the > > > timing... gauge isn't trustworthy enough so it'll take dang > > > near a week to find out the truth... :) > > > >So, how far did you move it? I'm looking at the front end and the rest of the car and thinking that I'll attempt to straighten the fender and install new hood, grille, headlights and live with a little dent behind the turn signal. The rest of the car is in fair to good shape, needs a lot in the way of seals and stuff. It looks great, rolls great (haven't started it yet, waiting for the radiator and such), feels great to sit in. But I can tell by looking at it that it's not in as nice of condition as my 190D, looks like Kevin was right, and so is my wife, and so is Curtis (my friend restoring my J10)... but this little 300CD is too nice to scrap... so I'm going to rescue it and see how it all works out. Been pricing parts, fender $125, $175 hood, $100 for the grille. So, basically I'll spend the $300 or so for the hood, found one the same color, but the paint isn't great, if I can rub it out it'll save me a couple hundred to fix that... My fender is in better shape then the one in the yard (same color). I'm buying a bunch of parts from a lister back east to fix the under the hood stuff... stay tuned... need to head to harbor freight for some tools... ;) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 May 2003 12:01:19 -0700 From: john Subject: Diesel collection http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/300cd-190d_.jpg - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 May 2003 12:06:53 -0700 From: "DerickAA" Subject: Re: 190D economy Hello, There is a jig for the 190 that costs about $300 that does an excellent job, I have one. It is a box with two LEDS and a magnetic senor that plugs into the locking port. http://www.samstagsales.com/images/mbabbox4.jpg The procedure is listed in the same timing section of the manual. I have printed that out and just put it in the box with the jig. I believe it is referred to as the RIV method. I will check when I get to work. (where my manual CD is right now) It is possible to time the pump using the locking device but it takes allot of patience and it is soo easy to forget to pull that lock back out when you are rotating the crank. this can damage your IP. (the best price I have on a rebuild IP for the 190 is in the $800 range!) Anyhow, the basic procedure is: 1. Check timing chain alignment cam and crank using crank dial and cam mark. 2. Install sensor into IP port. 3. Use socket on the crank bolt (not the cam) and rotate from TDC (this may take 2 revolutions depending on crank/cam position) 4. Keep tension on the socket wrench and slow down as you approach 20 deg BTDC mark on crank. 5. Go super slow and keep your eyes on the jig till both LEDs come on. 6. STOP!!!! release tension and see if the LEDS are still on. 7. If not go to step one. 8. Check reading on crank dial it should be 15 BTDC. +/- 1 degree. 9. If not follow the manual for tweaking the IP using the adjustment screw this rotates the pump a range of about 5 degrees (fine tune only) 10. If your off more than that you need either: new timing chain, pull the IP and turn the crank a couple of degrees then reinstall pump (oh yeah do NOT forget to pull the Locking nut off! ) ;) or your IP sprocket is hosed. (it is spring loaded). There may be more reasons but these are the ones I have seen. Things that are not in the manual: Keep tension on that wrench or you will be off 2 to 3 degrees! Make 4 revolutions with crank to remove chain slack.(it is not much but it will throw off the reading) If you use the locking nut have a method to remember to take it off! (Why do I keep harping on this...hmmmm) ;) Do not tell your coworkers or people who live close to you that you know how to do this. ;) Dooohhhhh tooo late :) Derick - ----- Original Message ----- From: "gary" To: "john" Cc: "Diesel Benz" Sent: Monday, May 19, 2003 6:22 AM Subject: Re: 190D economy > Speaking of timing... > > The manual states that there is only an "electronic" method of checking > timing on the 601/2/3 . Right now, it's got a strong air freshener scent to it, but that's better than the smoke. I've been leaving the sunroof open (it's nice to be in california) and letting it air out overnight, so we'll see. If it doesn't get better by the end of the week, off to target I go. :) > Good looking car BTW. I like the burgandy paint. Thanks. I really like the color myself, and am very happy with how good of shape (both visually and mechanically) it is in.
