You are going to get the most bang for your buck by mostly straightening it - don't paint it, and don't go TOO crazy pulling dents out (frankly, that 300D fender would have worked, but it was not worth what the yard wanted). Make a rock solid runner out of it, and put a coat of wax on it to ward off the mold, and sell it like that. Make sure to mention things like "30 mpg" and "easy to convert to biodiesel or WVO" in your ad. "Rebuilt transmission" is another good one to add (as well as all of the new radiator and oil cooler stuff you're putting on). It will be a good car for someone wanting a rock solid commuter vehicle, but I know you well enough to know that it isn't what you want :) K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) 85 190D (2.2, 5spd) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 21:26:25 -0600 From: "JC Jones" Subject: RE: WIERD -at-#&%$ W201 Electrical Gremlin....Help! Duh. Update. JC, The 190 I sold to Kevin (Becker grand prix) did the same thing you said. However when I pushed the button and held it, it changed back to the station I tuned in and stored it into memory. It took almost 10 full seconds of holding that button down. Here is a more detailed version of how I had to do it. Lets say the current preset is 1000 kHz on memory position 1 I tune to 1210 I want to store 1210 in memory location 1. I press memory button 1 and hold and keep holding. Radio switches back to 1000 kHz for a couple seconds (5 to 10 seconds) Radio finally switches back to 1210 and stores that in memory location 1, then and only then release the button. I cannot tell you how long it took me to figure that out. My past digital radios only took holding the button in for 1 or 2 seconds. I was tuning, holding the button, saying dang it, try it again...... It took me at least 15 min of putzing, to figure it out. Lucky for me I had nothing better to do while sitting in traffic. ;) Now I did have an old alpine where I had to hold the memory button and the ^ arrow at the same time to get it to work. I also had a radio shack stereo where, like you where saying, press he M button and the desired location. However; I admit it may be totally different on your rig. Hang tough you will figure it out. If not you can always punt it! Just make sure you have your steel toed shoes on when you do. ;) Derick - ----- Original Message ----- From: "JC Jones" To: Sent: Saturday, May 24, 2003 9:57 AM Subject: RE: WIERD -at-#&%$ W201 Electrical Gremlin....Help! "Rebuilt transmission" is another good one to add (as >well as al lof the new radiator and oil cooler stuff you're putting on). so far I'm keeping the costs down... paid $175 for the hood... just need to get the fender moved far enough forward to open the door. I don't want to pay $125 for that fender with bad paint and a dent when this one isn't that bad... I'd rather sell it with the damage showing so someone knows what they're getting. I prefer to deal with used 4x4s and trucks, folks in that market don't usually care about blemishes. :) >It will be a good car for someone wanting a rock solid commuter vehicle, but >I know you well enough to know that it isn't what you want :) yeah, you're right... but this will be a good unit to decide if I like the style, handling and feel of the 300CD. :) The 190D is a class act, only things wrong with it right now is the a/c and the squeaky rear end... Think I'll pawn those problems off onto my mechanic... I'm tired of trying to fit my hand in tight spaces... ;) That is one thing I prefer with the 123... lots easier to deal with. :) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... jesus, don't leave life without him, please! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 20:50:21 -0700 From: Kevin Pekarek Subject: Re: squeaky 190D On Sat, May 24, 2003 at 08:30:24PM -0700, john wrote: > At 08:00 PM 5/24/2003 -0700, Kevin Pekarek wrote: > >How about a needle fitting on a grease gun? Replacing them is either a PITA or expensive, take your pick :) Step on the rear bumper, and release. See if it comes straight up and stops, or if it oscillates. That will tell you whether or not you're replacing struts. IIRC, strut replacement requires using a spring compressor, and a friend of mine has three holes in the ceiling of his garage to prove this :O K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) 85 190D (2.2, 5spd) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 May 2003 21:56:46 -0600 From: "JC Jones" Subject: RE: WIERD -at-#&%$ W201 Electrical Gremlin....Help! Duh. Update. I am unbelievably amazed with the performance of this 560SEL (0-60 in 5.6, 0-80 in 6.0). It's no Ferrari, but it will certainly hold it's own with most American sports cars. It has so much power that I am never over 1/2 throttle, most of the time I'm just barely on the gas at all to maintain cruising speed (80 - 85). The mileage is not bad either (nothing even close to my 300D though). I estimate I'm getting around 20 in town and 25 or better on the highway. I'm sure if I drove it a little more aggressively those numbers would be about 1/2 of what they are. If you can't tell, I love this car, now I just need to trade up my 300D for a nice late 80's 300SDL, find a good deal on a 560SL, and I'll round out the Benz herd (would that be a herd, or a gaggle, or a flock, or...). I've heard there are a lot of performance upgrades I can do to the 560, there's a guy in New Jersey that has one with just external mods (no engine mechanical changes) that's pulling 8.97 1/4 mile times -at- 132mph and has a 3.6s 0-60.
