Hopefully I won't need to use the 190D part any time soon. ;) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2416033152 Going to try and get the fender free of the door tomorrow, may have to return the porta-power, stupid thing is leaking fluid... harbor freight sells junk... but I guess it only has to work one time, right? :) I couldn't get the 4 ton jack to move the front support... may resort to a chain and a Jeep... I've fixed two other "totals", no, three, that way... guess I'll have to push the benz out, chain it to one rig (no trees), attach a chain to the crunched part and my hitch and begin to pull it back out... or, at first attempt I'll use my Hi-lift jack as a come-a-long, or a come-a-long and carefully try to pull it that way... the stupid porta-power just isn't doing it... of course the puddle of hydraulic oil on the inner fender tells me it wet itself trying... ;) Just want to get that fender far enough out to open the door... dang, need my torch too... it's down at a friends house 100 miles away... :( Also found out that my "new" oil cooler has stripped threads on the lower part... rats... guess if I had my torch here I could braze the existing oil cooler, it's damaged on the top of the tank... oh well... no big rush... :) later, john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... Harbor freight is great for when you need a junk socket to weld to a nut you need to take off, or a junk wrench you need to grind, heat, and bend to make special dealer tools you are too cheap to buy. That might explain why you pissed off the porta power. It sounds like you may not have the angle right to undo the hit. The come-a-long idea is a good one, good thing you have an SJ in your driveway you can anchor to :) > Just want to get that fender far enough out to open the door... dang, > need my torch too... it's down at a friends house 100 miles away... :( I hear you. Pretty much everything of mine that isn't in the "roadside repairs" kit is at the other house, 200 miles away. :-/ > Also found out that my "new" oil cooler has stripped threads on the lower > part... rats... guess if I had my torch here I could braze the existing > oil cooler, it's damaged on the top of the tank... that sucks. I could have sold my computer and been doing something else, but OH NO, I have to try out a 300CD... I tell you, it was the color... I couldn't resist it. :) That light yellow draws me like a magnet... and to think I let my wife, neighbor, and friends talk me out of painting superdawg that color... of course I did see a GMC stepside (older one) that color, and it didn't work, so I keep telling myself, they're right, they're right... ah, but I digress... > > Going to try and get the fender free of the door tomorrow, may > > have to return the porta-power, stupid thing is leaking fluid... harbor > > freight sells junk... but I guess it only has to work one time, right? :) > >remember, you get what you pay for. Harbor freight is great for when you >need a junk socket to weld to a nut you need to take off, or a junk wrench you >need to grind, heat, and bend to make special dealer tools you are too cheap >to buy. (who, me? ) I've been buying cheap tools all my life because that's all I could afford... I've got piles of broken tools all over my shop... combination wrenches where one end still works... and I still use 'em... I need to take everything in my carport out in the driveway and only bring back what is good... (have to wait for it to stop raining... is it the 4th of July yet? ;) > > I couldn't get the 4 ton jack to move the front support... may resort > > to a chain and a Jeep... The come-a-long idea is a good one, good thing you have an SJ in your >driveway you can anchor to :) yeah, I forgot about my son's Golden Eagle... it'll make an excellent anchor... :) I guess I'll use the '87 XJ's hitch as the other anchor point... I'm half tempted to loop the chain around the rad support, put the jeep in low range and just nail it... of course I'd probably either pull the hitch off the Jeep or the rad support off the benz... or worse, break my chain. ;) using a porta-power is challenging, like where do you push from? unless you have an alignment jig/frame you end up pushing against something else and deform it... :( Body work is not my gig. I don't have the patience to set things up right... function before beauty... that's why my friend rescued superdawg... ;) I know how to make stuff work... that's what big hammers, torches and duct tape is for... ;) I'll have the front end pulled out tomorrow... and if harbor freight is open, my money back... or maybe I'll try the 10 ton version... not sure I really need to have a porta-power anyway, this is the third time I've used one... actually rebuilt two other totals without one before... A simple little bottle jack and pieces of lumber and pipe work just as well, and a lot easier to fit in the holes... ;) oh well... tomorrow is another day... :) let's see if I can get anything done then. ;) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... I took the front wheel off and went underneath with the weeping, leaking porta-power and managed to coax it to work and push from underneath while I beat the inner fender and fender into submission... :) Didn't even have to use a Full Size Jeep... still have to fix the rad support, but I think if I attached a chain and an FSJ to it and pulled there wouldn't be anything left on the car. ;) Anyway, on the first attempt the fender sprang back... so I did it again, this time from another angle and retightening the fender bolts at the same time... Looking at the mangled front end I'm not sure I can save the fender... Will have to wait to see if I can make the turn signal and headlight bucket fit in what's left of it. :) It's only $125 for a fender with the same color, it's paint is ok... not great, but at least with a bit of elbow grease I won't need to pay for repainting... but it's not a perfect fender... I may try to talk them down in price... The car will make someone a nice economical commuter rig so I'm working towards getting it functional and driveable. It's got too many minor TLC type issues to really spend the money to fix it right... nice thing is if someone wanted to, they will be able to. :) BTW, my wife came up with a great meaning for TLC... We were driving by a lifted '78 Wagoneer with a 401 and a sign that said needs "TLC"... She said... "takes lots of cash" :) Well, guess I'm going to call it a night... hope everyone had a nice memorial day weekend... My bald head is very sunburned... we had a few "sunbreaks" today... :) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... I started out on a 71 VW bug and then went over to benzes but was thinking about picking an old bug up and have been watching the papers the last couple of days and am just blown away by the prices for a bug here in seattle... A 70 era super beetle goes for 5-10k.(that's thousands) I remember I bought mine for $900.00 bucks and put about 40k on it before I had to do anything to it. Is this true across the country or is this some strange seattle thing? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier.
