My 2 cents: that's ridiculous. Well, maybe if it's fully restored to factory condition that price *might* be justifiable, but for a run-of-the-mill bug, that's just wrong. - -----Original Message----- From: hue wong [mailto:wong_hue-at-yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 2:16 AM To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net Subject: ot vw bug pricecs!!!!!!!! this is a bit off topic but I am blown away and have to sound out! I started out on a 71 VW bug and then went over to benzes but was thinking about picking an old bug up and have been watching the papers the last couple of days and am just blown away by the prices for a bug here in seattle... A 70 era super beetle goes for 5-10k.(that's thousands) I remember I bought mine for $900.00 bucks and put about 40k on it before I had to do anything to it. It's near my parent's place, so I'm having my dad look at it. Here's the question: the ad makes the car sound very nice. If it is indeed in the condition listed (excellent paint, no rust, great interior, everything works) what is it worth? I see these cars going for $6 to $7k with higher mileage. Is this a fluke, or are they really worth that much? Just want to know what to offer the guy if I'm indeed interested and don't want to insult him by accident. Thanks. OTOH, if that particular example has fully functional air conditioning and has had suspension rubber replaced already, I probably would be willing to go up to 7K, but I certainly would have no illusion of being able to sell it and get my money back. I would just think about what else one might buy as a used car for that amount. An 83 CD in very, very nice condition would be an awfully nice car to live with for 5 or 10 years. Either way, if they are asking over 5K, they are asking top dollar. The car darned well better be in top dollar condition, and that should be verified by an MB specialist mechanic. I agree with Alec, if they want over 5K for it then there had better be a compelling reason. Like, a brand new factory motor. OTOH, some folks really seem to like coupes--why I don't know. And remember, don't confuse the listing price with the selling price. Do a Carfax on it and find out if it really is a Florida car; if the seller is a dealer, ask him to provide it. If dealer waffles on providing a Carfax report, or claims ignorance about them then run-away. You'd be surprised about how many claims are exploded by the facts. You'd be surprised how many beautiful cars have salvage titles. A 100K miles works out to 5K per year. That's not very believable unless there is an explanation. Watch yourself on this one.
