I had these go bad several times on a 79 Toronado (front wheel drive-CV joints). These always started with vibration and sounds when turning sharply. What do you guys think the chances are there is to much Ring & Pin wear? Seems to off-load traction to the opposite wheel quietly enough when on jacks and alternating blocking each wheel. One other check I did was to move the axle shaft approx. .25+ inches back and forth until it met!! I assumed this would be normal tolerance between diff and wheel. Rubber boots still soft and appear air tight. Can't put my hand on my Haynes/Chilton manual (misplaced). What other ancillary parts would need to be replaced - bearings, seals etc. anything pressed on? Just want to get as much input as possible before I start throwing parts and unnecessary money since this will a DiY project. Other online parts sources would also be appreciated. Carparts.cmm lists wheel bearing only - aren't these called transaxles or cv joints? Saw only listings for wheel bearings. Thanks again for your help. T. A friend of mine has a 1932 Rolls Royce 20/25 with that kind of a roof and its a fun car to drive in. the rear section is nice and covered and the front section is open. I know I've been a little off the Diesel topic lately, but that happens when you get a new toy. Anyway, I'm having an electric fan problem on my 560SEL and am leaving Friday morning to drive to Vegas. That's sure to be an *interesting* trip through the desert with a "sort of working" electric cooling fan. Anyway, I was wondering if there is anybody in the Denver area that might have a w126 ('86+) electric cooling fan around they would be willing to part with. Mine is the dual fan setup with one completely disfunctional fan so it's only running at 50% capacity. I might have a good pair of axle shafts available from an 83 240D - very good condition. I have somebody considering the whole car at the moment, but if he doesn't buy it I'll have parts up for sale soon. But on my Volksie diesel rabbits there is a thermostat which screws into the radiator, thus contacting the coolant. Upon the coolant reaching threshold temperature the thermostat closes, and current flows to the fan. These thermostats are not that dependable. A survival trick is to pull the electric plug from the thermostat and stick a short piece of insulated wire into the holes. This will give you full-time cooling fan on. But that's way better than full time cooling fan off. Hope this helps. Free advice. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. I discovered that if I disconnect the plug on the temp sensor in the thermostat housing the fan turns on (most of the time) and stays on (most of the time), but it's still only 1 out of the 2 fans that are running so the other one just sits there and restricts air flow. Unfortunately, the mounting is such that I would have to do some fairly substantial modifications to replace the dual setup with a generic 14" electric or something similar. JC Jones :) Lacking air flow... ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #1046 **********************************
