Just to add to the "bug juice". The early super beetles (71 & 72?) had flat windshields. They were indistinguishable from the regular beetles unless you looked and noticed the air vent openings in the front apron or looked underneath and noticed the McPherson struts. While the Super Beetles had a better ride and handling than the "ball joint" beetles they replaced, they were not nearly as robust off road or on bad roads. Check dealer OEM parts prices before putting aftermarket stuff in it. Often the real parts are cheaper and far better quality. People on the list know mail order suppliers who can save even more--on good parts. Don't use oil filters from McParts stores, get them at dealer or mail order--Mann or Knecht brands actually filter the oil and are often less expensive than the 'cheap' ones. Call 1-800-FOR-MERC to get an owners manual (shop manuals, too if you want). Same number for roadside assistance. To start, pull knob above steering wheel half way and hold until the 5th glow plug (behind that funny looking grill) glows. Then pull knob the rest of the way out to engage starter. If the 5th glow plug never glows, you may need a new glow plug(s). They are wired in series so if one fails, the whole circuit is dead. Don't use ether if you can avoid it, it works but can score cylinders if over-used. The knob to left of key adjusts idle speed for cold weather. Depress accelerator before turning it. You will need it only once, twice a year in Dallas. Knob on left side of console, low down, is thermostat, etc.. Far left is no AC, power goes to heater fan. Turn clockwise to engage AC, send power to AC fan. The further you turn to the right, the cooler the car will get before compressor cycles. Between heat and AC, it switches the air handler doors, too. It's rather hard to turn. Don't force it, it's an expensive combo-switch. The sliders control: top left: defrost->floor vents, top right: amount of outside air, lower left: amount of heat for left side of car, lower right: amount of heat for right side of car. It's a good heat/AC system. The old York compressors are durable and inexpensive to replace (probably what yours needs about now). The manual controls are relatively simple and require far fewer repairs than the automatic climate controls MB fitted for several years after this car (those used some Chrysler components, by the way). From the pictures, with the 1/4 million km badge, your car has to have more than 160,000 miles. Maybe 184, 284??? Keep up with oil changes and it could last 500,000. Tail lamp assemblies are just under $300. Hope someone has a spare lens; I never found those sold separately. Yes, you do need to put oil in the IP. Use engine oil. Check regularly. You should get 25-30 mpg, maybe more. With manual transmission, 240Ds are very loveable cars. A few questions, What is the proper starting technique? I did not see a GP light. The seller always started it with a little ether and a jumper box. :( The right taillight is completely amber - this can't be correct. Anyone have a spare they want to sell? I noticed an oil fill on the IP - do I need to check/add oil to the IP? I think the white smoke may be from the engine being overfilled 1-2 quarts - that will be remedied in the next few days. Car restarts easily when warm but not so when cold. I turn on the ignition and wait about 30-45 seconds and then crank. Should I be turning the black knob that is to the left of the ignition switch? On a cold engine, I was able to feel the GPs get warm, right after turning on the key. Car did not come with an owners manual - how do you decipher the -at-#&$#% HVAC controls? Seems turning on the defroster button actually turns on the blower motor. Strange set up. Any illustrations/explanations would help. What kind of mileage do these get? Regardless, the car should be better than the 1987 Chrysler 5th Avenue that my mom is driving now. I wanted to get her something that required a little less maintenance. ;) Thanks, Waylon Dallas, Texas ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 08:30:32 -0400 From: "Aimino, Michael" Subject: Fleet Reduction Sale I'm reducing the size of my fleet. Distance: 2623.7 miles Approximate Travel Time: 40 hours 21 mins uh... divided by 8 hrs... that's 5 days on the road... around 105 gallons of Diesel at $1.60/gal, $168.32 for fuel... 5 x $80 - $400 hotels... air fare there... probably around $800 for the two of us... so the "bargain" $800 rusted container holding my Turbo Diesel will set me back about $2,200 or more...
