Kevin, you're right I do like the 190D... but I think I'm going to sell off the '85 190D, the '80 300CD, the '87 XJ, and the '91 XJ and buy one nice early '90's 300D with the 2.5L TD, if I can find one and it all works and I can afford it. :) I didn't get the a/c fixed and really don't want to spend more money on the 190D... with the sunroof open and the windows down a bit it was comfy even though it was 85 degrees in Seattle today... I'm still in digest mode, so cc me if you expect a response. ;) On the 300CD, the hood is on and the fender mostly straight, I'm having trouble getting the old fan bolts off. Once I get the fan stuff changed around I can install the oil/trans coolers and rad. I terminated the a/c condensor, it wasn't leaking but it was bowed and the system wasn't charged with freon... but it had pressure... so I'm going to pull the belt. I cut the lines and crimped them so no moisture will get into the system, so all that will be needed is a new condenser and a charge, and whatever else was going on with the Rube Goldberg climate control that I'm not going to deal with. :) Life is too short. I'll take some pix and put it on line later... To make it right it'll need a new front fender and paint, the fender is around $150 give or take $25. I think I'm into the 300CD around $1,800 or so, maybe a bit more by now... It could have been worse I guess... :) I suppose running it should be worth around $2,000 to someone as a nice commuter, or as a project... or am I dreaming in thinking I'll get what I'm into it back? :) Hey, if you're interested, make me an offer, I need it to go away... be fair with me and I'll give it serious thought, and if you come get it right now before I have to figure out how to get those bolts out of the fan I'll really give you a bargain. ;) I'm asking $3,500 for the '85 190D, have had a lot of things fixed on it... other then the a/c pump leaking everything is working. All new struts, new sunroof cable, new water pump & tstat, new hoses, all new injectors, new glow plugs... tires are like new... fixed the seats, comfy... I know Kevin has already vouched for it... :) I wish I would have had my camera with me to take a picture of that beautiful smoke-silver '92(?) 300D with the 2.5L TD... I'm hooked... :) Waiting for the guy to call me... BTW, the XJ's are both in excellent condition... both are lifted and everything, including the a/c, works on them. The '87 is my favorite, despite it's 243,000 miles worth of experience... asking $3,500 for it, but I'm hoping it doesn't sell, and would consider offers below that. ;) The '91 we just bought, it's super clean and has only 115,000 miles and is well equipped and has the Old Man Emu lift kit ($750 kit!), it has a lot of other extras... I need to get what I just paid for it... $5,000. I've got no shortage of vehicles and no problem in finding others it seems... :) I think I'm up to 88 that I've owned... only have 7 right now... ;) but two of those are down in Centralia... rofl... http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... I was on my way to work when my heater core let loose a stream of boiling coolant on my accelerator foot. Right in the middle of a jam. Just try getting over to the right hand side with a steamed up windsheild and no cooperation from other motorists while being sprayed by hot coolant. Reminded my of the tourture scene in the movie Dune. ;) AAA comes through again. Second degree burns around my ankle. A few blisters but okay. Now that I have vented.... There is a roadside workaround to bypass the heater core using what is under the hood, a 10 mm wrench, a tool suitable to remove hose clamps, at least 1 gallon of water and 2 four inch wire ties). - - remove cowling under windshield (four 10 mm bolts) - - remove the hose pax side under windshield - - disconnect vacuum hose off heater valve - - disconnect 4 inch piece of hose from hard pipe and remove vacuum valve and hose assy. - - remove 10mm nut and bolt holding hard pipe to battery compartment wall. - - unplug electric coolant circulator motor - - remove electric motor from rubber motor mount - - remove hardpipe from firewall and disconnect other end. - - plug in vacuum valve assy into the hose you just disconnected the hardpipe from - - plug in the hard pipe into the othe end of the vacuum valave assy - - place hardpipe across engine and secure with two wire ties. - - disconnect heater hose driverside under winsheild and pull back through the firewall. - - connect this hose to the other end of the hard pipe. - - I had to also disconnect the cruise control link rod to allow routing of the hardpipe. Well I was 2 min from having it fixed when the tow truck arrived, to play it safe I took the tow.... Anyhow, I have since got a 4 foot piece of heater hose and put in a safer bypass. I have till the fall to effect a core replacement. May you be wearing ankle high boots if this happens to you. In reality, the only people who put themselves in situations like this is highway patrol officers. Even still, I'm somewhat mindful of the direction I park if I park on the side of the freeway (so that the bumper doesn't take a direct hit), and I always keep an eye in my rear view when stopped regardless of what I'm driving (and you'd be surprised how many pains in the neck (literally) can be avoided by just doing this one thing). ALL crown vics from around 92 to around 00-01 have this problem, but like I said, only the state troopers seem to have a problem with it. Last time mine was getting serviced at the dealer (tranny service, and the walnut creek ford dealer is actually pretty decent), they informed me that the tank safety recall hadn't been performed, and if the car was still in service (if you've seen pictures, you would think it was)... I told them it was no longer used in active pursuit, and let them draw conclusions. Apparently, Ford will only pay for the recall on an active patrol car. They asked me to schedule, but I never got around to it. One of these times I should post a pic of that monster :) > In my High School Days I used to have a 1974 Grand Torino Brogham 4 door > with a 351 Windsor engine. It was a great car and ran very well. the first car I owned and drove (not the first car I owned, which still doesn't run but we won't go there) is (still have it) an 82 ford country squire. 230k miles on the original 302 2bbl and original AOD. They really don't make them like that anymore. Oddly enough, at almost 1800 lbs lighter, the 190D feels just as solid going down the road, even though the short wheelbase of the 190D causes the ride to be rougher and more succeptible to crosswinds. > All of the domestic car companies are cutting too many corners on > quality. Actually, everyone (japanese and european as well) are trying to avoid overdesigning cars, as well as trying to save money while building them. If you make too good of a car, people never buy new ones. The guy I bought the tan hornet from still has his 66 daytona... 450k original on the engine and tranny. And that's a GAS motor and air-cooled automatic. Enough about gassers though, 301 miles on the tank, and it's just around halfway. I'm happy. :) K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) 85 190D (2.2, 5spd) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 22:47:12 -0700 From: Kevin Pekarek Subject: Re: My 190 bit me On Tue, Jun 17, 2003 at 10:00:16PM -0700, DerickAA wrote: > Well I should have stayed home Friday the 13th. Reminded my of the tourture scene in the movie > Dune. ;) AAA comes through again. never seen dune, but I've had heater cores go, one on my feet (in my brother's bronco... helped with the "why the F do I smell coolant" diagnosis), two others on passengers shortly after starting the car. The best was when I was taking a female friend whom I worked with at the time to lunch. We'd known each other long enough that she knew about my ecclectic taste in cars. It was my turn to drive, so I grabbed the keys to the 83 spirit I drove to work, and we headed out to the car. She got in the car (which wasn't locked because the driver's window didn't stay up when rolled up), and started in with the "what is this POS?" "oh, just some spirit I bought for a hundred bucks." "is it going to make it to the restaurant?" "yeah, actually, it runs quite well." "whatever, it's f-ing ugly. one of these days, you're gonna get yourself a real car and stop playing around with these pieces of sh!t." and she went on, and on, and on as I started the car. It fired right up, and dumped the contents of the heater core on her feet. Nice, rusty, nasty, unflushed, radiator water that smelled like dead coolant. I told her the car didn't appreciate her talking like that, and laughed my head off. She didn't think it was quite so funny. Yes, we're still really good friends after that. (for those wondering what an 83 spirit looks like, see http://www.punk.net/~kevin/Spirit1.jpg) > Second degree burns around my ankle. A few blisters but okay. ouch. from my minor first aid training, burn cream and butter only makes it take longer to heal. I usually keep an aloe plant around the house to cure burns - store aloe has alcohol in it which hurts like the dickens, and I'm enough of a klutz that I need to keep such a plant around :) > Now that I have vented.... Noted, thanks. I probably should print this out and put it in the glove compartment. > I have till the fall to effect a core replacement. I'd be interested to hear if this affects your cooling system performance. My fords would overheat if the heater core was bypassed, because of the fluid capacity that was lost when the heater core was bypassed. > May you be wearing ankle high boots if this happens to you. Aside from a cheap pair of sandles, I don't own anything but. But you've met me and you probably drew that conclusion :) Speaking of cooling systems, that radiator looks awesome. You wanted me to tell you when I unboxed it so you could leave feedback. An AMC six is pretty hard to wear out, you just lose two mpg and need to keep an eye on the dipstick after 180k miles.
