Fading usually isn't a problem here, unless the car was on the other side of the mountains or down in CA. :) Seattle has the lowest hours of sunshine in the country. :) Looking at the specs on the 3.0L 6 cyl turbo used in '87 it appears that it'll blow the doors off the 2.5L 5 cyl turbo used later... why'd they go back to the smaller motor? emissions? (that's kind of what nitske alluded to...) I've got a guy coming down from Bellingham around 10am to look at the 300CD... I may try to get over and look at this '87 before he shows up... silver is a nice color, blue interior can be too. I prefer a light color, tan preferably... :) The price seems right and hopefully the a/c won't be a big deal to fix. Do you know if the '87 300D's had headlight wipers? :) I've been looking at every Benz within site, on the internet and in this book... and in my driveway... rofl... I'm thinking newer is better... the guy's at Aurora Auto Wrecking in Seattle suggested that I'd really like the 124 chassis. I liked my 123's but the climate control and dated body work against it... I just can't get excited about the 123 any more, except the 300CD, and it's just not very practical for us... the 190D is a fine little car, but it just hasn't won my heart. :) My 126 was ok, but I liked parts of it over the 123 but disliked its size. I still think a Turbo Diesel stuffed into my '87 Jeep Cherokee would be my best pick yet. ;) john >john wrote: > >>Ok, here's one... >> >>(this will be very subjective, kevin, I already know your answer, but >>say it anyway. ;) >> >>If you had a choice between the following, which would you pick: :) >> >>1) 1985 300D (turbo) light yellow 208k for about $4500 >>2)1991 300d (2.5l td) white/gray 270k for about $9990 >>3) 1987 300d (3.0L td) silver (blue int) 280k for $3950 >>4) 1985 190D (2.2L) light yellow 220k - paid for >>5) 1980 300d (3.0L) light yellow 277k - on ebay (needs some TLC) >>6)1995 E300 (td) unkn color - unknn mileage forgot the # at work - $15k >>7) 1984 300D (3.0L td) needs timing chain and "some work" - $350 >> >>Objective: a nice, clean, economical, nice riding, quiet, yet >>powerful car that doesn't move you four inches toward the back >>seat when shifting from first to second, has a little bit of class >>and will get the approval of my co-pilot and wife of 28 years... :) >> >>I think 1, 5 and 7 have already been "vetoed" as "looking old". I do have the tools & materials to work aircraft aluminum, which is probably ideal for fabricating air manifolds & housings. I don't know if a pleated filter with a casual dusting of charcoal is adequate to remove the stuff I'm talking about ( ozone ). I was thinking more of a pleated paper filter backed by a bed of carbon, kind of like what you see in gas masks for painting cars. The kind where you can lean over a bucket of lacquer thinner, take a deep breath, and smell NOTHING. I suspect that there might not be enough space under the panel for the kind of filter I'm talking about, in which case I would have to locate it somewhere else. Like maybe under the passenger seat with a long flat duct on the floor. Probably too much work though. - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 07:25:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Jerome Kaidor Subject: Re: Refrigerant License "Cordova, Carlos (Alec)" wrote: > > The question of where online to obtain an R12 license came up on another > Mercedes list, and this looks like a useful reply. > *** The trouble is that in order to properly handle R12, you need some really expensive equipment. I am looking for an MP3-CD player-radio that will fit either a '79 300TD or an '84 300D. I have seen a Blaupunkt (at Costco) MP3-CD player that would meet my requirements, but I don't know how to determine if it will be a good fit. I am guessing that it is the size of the faceplate and the connector wiring. Does anyone have the necessary specs that will help me determine what will work? Of those 2, I'd also pick 3. From the whole list, let's see > 1) 1985 300D (turbo) light yellow 208k for about $4500 for this price, it should be in good shape. A/C can be dealt with, I'm talking about suspension rubber. If that's already been mostly replaced, this one ranks high on my list. > 2)1991 300d (2.5l td) white/gray 270k for about $9990 Even on a diesel Benz, that's an awful lot of miles for 10K. Maybe if some major pieces have been replaced properly... > 3) 1987 300d (3.0L td) silver (blue int) 280k for $3950 Nice prospect, but probably needs lots of tinkering with that many miles. I also second the concerns about the blue dash. They have a higher propensity for developing cracks. Climate control in this will be very, very similar to numbers 1 and 7. > 4) 1985 190D (2.2L) light yellow 220k - paid for No turbo, no big motor, no stick, no space, but paid for and running. > 5) 1980 300d (3.0L) light yellow 277k - on ebay (needs some TLC) No turbo. You already know this combination, and you don't particularly like it. Neither do I. > 6)1995 E300 (td) unkn color - unknn mileage forgot the # at work - $15k Probably outside the budget. Not sure if 95 diesels had the engine wiring harness disintegration problems of the M104 gas motor family, but I'm now very afraid of any 94 to 96 Benz. > 7) 1984 300D (3.0L td) needs timing chain and "some work" - $350 And the seats are shot, the paint is in bad shape, the interior is abused, you KNOW the A/C is dead, etc., etc., etc. I personally would look real close at number one. The price looks a little high to me. If the condition justifies that price, this one could be really nice. Number 3 is newer, 124, 6 cylinder, and it's priced lower. It's probably not in beautiful shape, although it's definitely worth a look. Number 2 is probably more computerized than number 3, affecting how much work you can do on the car at home. If 123 bodies have been vetoed, you're probably better off right now sticking with your current ride and shopping around a little longer for a better diesel 124. 1987 was possibly the only year for the 6 cylinder diesel in the 124, so the market is not flooded with them, but I think a good example of that car could be a very nice fit for most of your (and your mate's) stated needs. By the way, I'm pretty sure 87 300E had headlight wipers. They may have omitted them on the 2.6 motor version, and I'm not sure if the diesels had them or not. If they weren't standard on the diesel, they may have been optional.
